                                                                                September 2026

Dear 5C fifth graders,

Welcome to fifth grade! My name is Mr. Close, and I will be your homeroom teacher this year. I hope you are having an enjoyable and relaxing summer and are beginning to think about preparing for another great year of learning at Stony Brook.

For those of you who don't know me, I've been a teacher here at Stony Brook since 2003. I have been lucky enough to have been teaching fifth grade all that time! As you’re probably aware, you will work with several teachers this year for your academic subjects. Mrs. Marion and Mrs. Jimenez are the other 5th-grade homeroom teachers. During our first days together, we will talk more about your schedules and clear up any questions you may have.

Here is your 5th GRADE STONY BROOK SUPPLY LIST. (Please try to have these materials for the first day of school—thank you!)

I have included links for some items as a point of reference. Feel free to purchase items wherever you choose to shop.

  • Portfolio/Accordion File—Please try to purchase one with at least seven slots. Labels are often included with the portfolio; bring these to school so that we may label them together.
  • One Composition Notebook for writing  (100 pages)
  • Post-it notes for reading

  • Pencils
  • Headphones/ear buds
  • One pencil pouch/case that can fit in a slot in your portfolio. You will be responsible for carrying it around to each classroom.
  • White Canvas Tote Bag that we can decorate and fit all of your items that you'll carry to your classes—your portfolio (full of papers), your Chromebook, and your headphones/earbuds. Minimum size:  14" x 16"
  • Backpack
  • A few optional items: crayons, markers, scissors, highlighters, and a glue stick. We will have plenty of these items in our classroom to share.

Our school year begins on Tuesday, September 1st. I look forward to meeting you on our first day! Enjoy the rest of your summer! I can't wait to get started!

                                                                                Fondly,

                                                                                Mr. Close
