ABOUT ME - Ms. Doherty

Me

BRHS

Hello! My name is Ms. Doherty, and I am very excited to meet all my new students at BRHS! This is my 11th year teaching, and I love my job. To spend every day with teenagers is a blessing -- we read, write, laugh, and grow together, and I can't think of a better life for me than that. Even in the summer I dedicate a lot of time planning for the next school year, taking professional development classes with my favorite teaching gurus, reading teaching books, and reading/writing for fun. Yet, no matter how much time I spend learning and improving my teaching every year, I continue to learn SO much from my students. They are really what make my job so rewarding.

In addition to teaching, I've been the BRHS "girls distance" track coach for the past 7 years, and I've been a volunteer coach for the girls XC team for 3 years. Running is a passion of mine -- I ran Varsity cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track in high school and then moved on to run two years on the Johns Hopkins University DIII team until I severely hurt my knee. Eventually I healed enough to run the Baltimore Half Marathon in '08 and a few 5ks years later, but I still deal with knee issues every now and then. As a coach, my greatest hope is now to see my runners reach their dreams and goals.

I'm also the advisor for FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and "Sweet Reads" and am the district coordinator for Poetry Out Loud (see more info about this program on my homepage).

My Journey through School

I grew up in Edison, NJ and went to J. P. Stevens High School, only about half an hour from Bridgewater. After graduating from JPS, I attended Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland where I triple majored, earning my B.A. in English, Writing Seminars, and Psychology. At Hopkins, I discovered my love for poetry. I was drawn to poems by Robert Frost, Louise Gluck, Sharon Olds, Greg Williamson, and Steve Scafidi. Eventually, I even wrote poems of my own. I also enjoyed reading essays by transcendentalists writers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. My goal as a teacher is to inspire my own students to love read and write all types of writing.

JHU '09
(I'm in there somewhere ^)

Ever since I was in 8th grade, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I always loved working with kids and learning. So after graduating from JHU, I attended graduate school at The College of New Jersey and received my Master of Arts in English Secondary Education.

Some of My Hobbies

Besides teaching my wonderful classes at BRHS, I enjoy coaching; spending time with my family, boyfriend, and friends; running and going to the gym; watching movies (my fav. is The Rookie); listening to music (my fav. bands are Matchbox 20, Train, OneRepublic, Third Day, and Ed Sheeran); reading my latest book; and writing. I also became a NASM certified personal trainer a few summers ago and received speciality certifications in Corrective Exercise, Nutrition, and Behavior Change.

Every summer my family and I go to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire where I go jetskiing, swimming, and boating. During the winter months, I love skiing and snowtubing. A couple years ago I finally got the gumption to attempt snowboarding with my brother, but I have yet to venture off the bunny hill. (See why below.)

Oh, I almost forgot. In my spare time, I've also been training my cat, Earl, to enter grades. Don't worry he only knows how to press the "A" key...
