To create a balance inside the classroom, teachers, students, and parents must stay on top of policies and procedures.

Welcome!!!

As an English teacher, my job is to guide you through the wonderful world of English Literature. I anticipate an exciting, yet challenging year filled with short stories, poems, novels, informational texts, plays, and writing.

Every year has been a year filled with much uncharted territory.  As we start this year, I want to say that one - we are in this together, two - I am here to talk to you, and three - I am here to teach you. With that being said, this contract was created with meticulous considerations as well as with the motive for us to have the best experience.

High standards DOES NOT mean you need to know everything and you can’t be yourself.

High standards mean I know each and every one of you brings some type of knowledge to the table. You’re not dumb. I have full confidence that you can master what is being thrown at you, so since I know you can do it, I want you to believe it too. I won’t let you slack.

School Policies

I will enforce all school policies.

Dress Code

Dress code will be enforced. Under the Memorial High School Handbook, "Schools uniforms must be worn at all times when the student is in the building or on school grounds...any student in violation of our policy should be sent to the appropriate administrative office immediately."

With that said, please be in uniform i.e school shirt, black or khaki pants, and ID around your neck. NO JEANS

Tardy/Cuts

Unless the student provides a note from a teacher or administrator as to why he or she is late, the student will be given a detention if late for homeroom or class. Please be aware, I do give chances. Life happens; however, if it starts to become repetitive or disruptive the detention is given.

Cutting is not tolerated in Memorial High School.

Cutting policy is as followed:

1st Cut- detention + parent notification

2nd Cut- detention + parent conference

3rd Cut - Saturday detention + parent conference

Etc.

Plagiarism

"Plagiarism is presenting someone else's words, ideas, or data as your own work." I DO NOT tolerate plagiarism. As young adults, you are responsible for your own work. Suspicion of plagiarism will result in:

Strike 1: Student teacher conference after class

Strike 2: Conference + a grade of zero

Strike 3: Conference + a grade of zero + a scheduled parent teacher conference

Major Assignments: CP

All assignments are due on the assigned due date. If the assignment is not handed in on that date, (depending on the assignment) the student will be given a chance to hand it in late with deducted points. For each day it is late, 3 points are off per day. After 5 days, I will not accept late work. Because of Google Classroom and email students have access to see their homework online and to talk to me via messaging if there are any problems. I will also be posting youtube videos as a recap for each class, if requested by the class.  Therefore, there are no excuses.*

Major Assignments: Honors

Missing assignments will be given a grade of zero.

*Please note: Homework assignments are different. Homework is used to build upon major assignments. Therefore, the policy above does not apply.

*Severe cases will be excused, a parent-teacher conference will be provided to figure out a plan of action.

Also, be aware: If for ANY reason the homework isn't posted, i.e technical malfunctions, that DOES NOT mean the homework given IN CLASS does NOT exist.

Class Culture:

Our course readings and classroom discussions will often focus on mature, difficult, and potentially challenging topics. As with any course designed with relevant topics and themes in mind, course topics are often personal. Readings and discussions might trigger strong feelings—anger, discomfort, anxiety, confusion, excitement, humor, and even boredom. Some of us will have emotional responses to the readings; some of us will have emotional responses to our peers’ understanding of the readings; all of us should feel responsible for creating a space that is both intellectually rigorous and respectful. Above all, be respectful (even when you strongly disagree) and be mindful of the ways that our identities position us in the classroom. Lastly, please remember, and rest assured, that you will be evaluated only by how well you master the subject matter of the course, not by whether you personally agree with it or reject it.

Preferred Name & Gender Pronouns:

Professional courtesy and sensitivity are especially important with respect to individuals and topics dealing with differences of race, culture, religion, politics, sexual orientation, gender, gender variance, and nationalities. Class rosters are provided to the teacher with the student's legal name. I will gladly honor your request to address you by an alternate name or gender pronoun. Please advise me of this preference early in the year so that I may make appropriate changes to my records.

Communication:

I am here after school in my room everyday except Tuesdays. If you have a question and forget to ask me in class, feel free to stop by!

You can email me, but I don’t check it after 6 pm. I am human and have 2 goblin children who need my constant attention.

  • Do not message me on google classroom - private comments on assignments, on announcements, etc. I do not get alerts.

Classroom Rules/Policies

*The school has their own policies on vulgarity and tardiness. Please become familiar with it.

Phone/Headphone/Airpods Policy: ALL airpods and headphones are to be put away at the beginning of class. Phones will be collected at the beginning of the period! Everyone will be assigned a number, and that will be your number for the whole year. Anyone who does not hand in a phone (who has one) first offense will be given a warning. Second offense will be sent down to the office and given detention.

Bathroom Policy: Must sign in and out. Must use hall pass. If it becomes a pattern (3 consecutive class periods) and/or you are out for too long (6-7 minutes), it becomes a disciplinarian issue and a cut.

Chromebook Policy: Only open chromebooks when instructed. I will tell you when to take out your chromebooks. During any point of the period, if you are caught looking at anything that is not associated with the work instructed for class, you will get a zero for classwork for the day.

Penalties

Breaking any of the classroom standards will result in:

First Offense:  A warning.

Second Offense: First Offense + detention

Third Offense: Second Offense + conference with the principal and parent

Rewards

Extra Credit

Extra Credit will be given upon completion of ALL marking period requirements. Students with more than 3 zeros will NOT be eligible for extra credit.

There are a plethora of opportunities to receive extra credit.

Extra credit can either be up to 5 or 10 points depending on the rigor of the assignment.

I hope everyone is just as excited as I am to have a year filled with education, growth, and engagement!!
