Frequently Asked Questions: (click here for a downloadable PDF version)
What are the housing facilities like?
Students (and their chaperones) will be sleeping in well heated cabins which have bathroom and shower facilities in them. Cabin sizes vary, but all students will be given an opportunity to room with at least a few of their friends. Cabins are segregated by gender, but all other activities are coed.
Who will be supervising my child?
Bridgewater-Raritan Middle School staff members (and one administrator) will accompany the students on the trip. Camp Staff provides instructors for all of the learning activities during the day, but at least one BRMS staff member will be with each group of children for all activities throughout the trip.
What if my child gets sick?
There will be a nurse on duty at all times. All students are required to complete a medical information form which will let the nurse know what medications he/she routinely takes and any medical conditions or limitations he/she has. Medications will be dispensed by the nurse, often during meal times. If your child feels ill during the trip, someone will accompany him/her to the nurse’s cabin. In the case of a serious problem you will be notified and a joint decision will be made about whether or not you should come to pick up your child. In the case of an emergency, your child will be transported to Newton Memorial Hospital. We will make every effort to contact you immediately.
Should I encourage my child to telephone home?
No! We will provide you with the number of the camp office in case of a family emergency, and we will contact you if necessary, but students to not have access to a telephone. Cell phones are also not permitted on the trip.
What will my child be doing while at camp?
During the day, students will be assigned to various science, social studies, and social growth learning activities. They will gain experience in problem solving, observation, and working with others. In the evening, there will be guest speakers and other programs and activities run by camp and/or staff members.
How is the food?
The food is good! Students who have special food needs due to allergies, religious restrictions, or who are vegetarians can be accommodated. If this applies to your child be sure you contact your child’s science teacher as soon as possible. The food is also plentiful; do not send your child to camp with any food – it will be confiscated.
Will I have to buy special clothing or gear?
Students will be given a list of items needed to make this trip comfortable and successful. The key to staying warm is to dress in layers and keep your hands, feet, and head warm and dry. Students who do not have a particular item might arrange to borrow it from an older friend or relative. If necessary, the staff may also be able to loan necessary items to a child if they know in advance that it is needed.
