Writer's Workshop
Mini Lesson: 10-15 Minutes
The teacher models a specific writing skill(s) that they want students to focus on. The teacher may use a mentor text to help model how an author uses a strategy. Similar to Reading Workshop, during the mini lesson the students "turn and talk" to their partner about each other's writing and how they would apply the strategy that was introduced to their own writing pieces.
Independent Writing: 20-40 Minutes
After the mini lesson, the students will find a "cozy" spot within the room or stay at their seats. They then, write a brand new entry or apply the new strategy to previous entries in their Writer's Notebooks. As the students write, the teacher has writing conferences with students to assess and reflect on their writing pieces.
Sharing: 5-10 Minutes
During this time, students take turns sharing their writing. As a class, we reflect and evaluate each other's writing, offer suggestions for improvement, and celebrate wonderful writing.
