General Goal

The general goal of this course is to provide students with the opportunity to understand and apply the main ideas in chemistry and to relate general chemistry principles in real life.

Course Objectives

The students will acquire knowledge about chemistry and its applications by constructing an experience utilizing the textbook, instructor, outside resources (ex. science web sites, science journals) and laboratory explorations. Specifically, it aims to:

—  Develop an understanding of the main ideas of Chemistry.

—  Relate and apply the principles of Chemistry in the real world.

—  Perform accurate quantitative measurements in the laboratory.

—  Develop critical thinking, problem-solving and scientific investigation skills.

Course Content

—  Unit I – Measurement and Problem-Solving

—  Unit 2 – Matter

—  Unit 3 – Atoms and the Periodic table

—  Unit 4 – Chemical Bonding and Compound-Formation

—  Unit 5 – Moles, Reactions and Stoichiometry

—  Unit 6 – States of Matter and Energy Changes

—  Unit 7 – Solutions, Acids and Bases

—  Unit 8 – Carbon and Its Compounds

Materials – You are expected to bring the following materials to class every day.

  1. Chemistry workbook
  2. Binder with lined loose-leaf paper and a folder to keep important papers
  3. Blue or black ink pens.
  4. Sharpened pencils.
  5. Handheld pencil sharpener.
  6. Highlighter – any color.
  7. Scientific calculator (preferably TI-30X IIS).

Classroom Rules and Procedures

1. Come to class on time and prepared

2.  Attend to personal needs before coming to class.

3.  Be on task all the time.

4.  Remain in your assigned seat unless you have permission to get up.

5.  Talk only when permitted.

6.  Use polite speech and body language.

7.  The teacher dismisses the class, not the bell.

8.  Follow the school policy as itemized in the student handbook.

Classroom Discipline

First offense: Warning

Second offense: Punish work – Complete the Minor Infraction Assignment. The paragraph on Respect must be legibly written in black ink on loose-leaf paper. A parent or guardian must sign the minor infraction assignment form. The assignment and signed form must be placed on my desk the next day before the tardy bell rings. If the minor infraction assignment is not completed, it will be doubled and due the next day. If the doubled assignment is not completed, the student will be sent to the office with a referral.

Third offense: Double Punish work - Parents will be notified.

Fourth offense: Office referral.

Absences

It is your responsibility to obtain makeup work for missed assignments if you are absent.  Students have as many days to complete makeup work as he/she was absent.  (Refer to Student Handbook!) If you know you will be absent, please let me know so that I can get your work to you ahead of time.

Grading – Final grades will be calculated as follows: Total – 100%

Major Assessment – 40%

Assessed for Accuracy – 35%

Participation/Completion – 10%

End-of-Semester Assessment – 15%

Text Reminders: To sign up, text the code @pablichem2 (2nd block) or @pablichem4 (4th block) to 81010

Suggestions for having a positive learning experience with chemistry:

  1. Come to class ready to learn every day.
  2. Recopy or type your notes.  This practice improves understanding and memorization.
  3. Read your textbook.  Use outside sources such as Science websites.
  4. Practice drawing figures.  Drawing figures helps you to recognize and understand them.
  5. Work and rework chemistry problems.
  6. Use different colored ink to highlight main points.
  7. Study daily for at least 30 minutes.  Waiting till the last minute to cram for an exam is stressful and exhausting.  The brain can only process so much information at a time.
  8. Do all of the homework.  Certain aspects of any discipline are repetitive.  Doing some things at home will improve certain skills that with practice will become automatic when taking unit exams.
  9. Study with other students as well as on your own.

Bathroom

You must sign out & use a pass to go to the restroom or get water. You may not go to the restroom during a lecture, unless it is an emergency. Only one person can leave class at a time during the middle 30 minutes of class.

I am excited to have this opportunity to teach you this semester. Please remember that everything I do is in your best interest. I look forward to a productive and fun learning experience!
