Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

 

             My name is Mrs. Mastorio (formally Ms. Bartlett), and I will be your child’s Kindergarten teacher this year. As you know, I will spend a great deal of time with your child. Because of this, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a few things about myself and what I expect from both you and your child.

             This is my twenty-first year at Grove Street School.  I have previously taught fifth, second, and fourth grades. This will be my sixteenth consecutive year teaching Kindergarten. I graduated from Rutgers University in 2003 with a Bachelor’s degree and obtained my teaching certificate in 2006 from New Jersey City University. In September 2015, I became a mother to my son, Jase. He will be in Fifth grade this year. In December 2018, I had my second son Logan and he will be in First grade this year. On August 8, 2025 I married my husband Joe. 

             The first three days of school I am going to spend time going over our rules, how to use the chrome book, and my expectations and procedures. All important notes home will be sent via ClassDojo as well as in their folders. Please check your child’s folder and ClassDojo daily to ensure your child is keeping up with the assignments and that you get important information. It is very important that the emergency contact information is kept up to date throughout the school year. Please let me or the main office know immediately if there are any updates.

             Kindergarten is an important grade because your child will be working on Phonics, Basic Mathematics, and their fine motor skills. We will be using the Reading Wonders program for our reading and comprehension skills, Magnetic Reading for our phonics skills and our Envision for our math series. I will be helping each student in working towards learning to read books that are on their reading level. I encourage you to help your child further develop their reading abilities by reading to them or with them on a nightly basis. There is no key that unlocks more doors to a successful future than being able to read well. It is the foundation of success in all subjects, including non-academic ones. Your child will learn how to write sentences and by the end of the year may even be writing a paragraph. Your child will also be learning math concepts such as counting to 100 by tens and ones, patterns, grouping, shapes, and simple addition and subtraction. The students will work independently reviewing and reapplying what they learn during the school day. The students will be working on the computers daily using the program IReady. This is designed to enhance the ELA and Math skills taught in the lessons.

             As a parent/guardian, YOU are the most important person in your child’s life and we need to work together for your child’s benefit.  We need your support with the assignments, academic goals, and the citizenship plan I have set for the students.  I will be using Class Dojo to keep in contact with you. I also encourage you to use the “PowerSchool Parent Portal” on the Irvington website to continuously check your child’s grades. For more information on this please see Ms. Utuk, our school counselor.
