Course Overview:

Pre-Calculus serves as the bridge between Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus. It deepens students' understanding of mathematical concepts and prepares them for the study of calculus. The course focuses on advanced algebraic techniques, trigonometry, complex numbers, vectors, and an introduction to limits and continuity.

COURSE INFORMATION

Course Description: Linear functions, equations, inequalities, systems of linear equations, quadratic equations,

elementary functions, graphing functions.

Number of Credits: 3

 

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will:

  1. Master the properties and graphs of polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.
  2. Analyze and solve trigonometric equations and apply trigonometry to real-world scenarios.
  3. Explore sequences, series, and probability concepts.
  4. Understand and apply vectors and parametric equations.
  5. Gain a foundational understanding of limits and continuity, preparing them for Calculus.

POLICIES

DMS Course Policies: All DMS students must familiarize themselves with, and adhere to, the Department of

Mathematical Sciences Course Policies, in addition to official university-wide policies. DMS takes these policies

very seriously and enforces them strictly.

Grading Policy: The final grade in this course will be determined as follows:

 

Homework Policy: Homework is an expectation of the course. All homework for the semester is on the

syllabus, by section, below. It is essential to hand in homework on time. Late homework will be assessed at a 50% penalty.

  1. Unit 1: Functions and Their Graphs
    • Overview of functions and their properties
    • Transformations of functions
    • Polynomial and rational functions
    • Exponential and logarithmic functions
  2. Unit 2: Trigonometric Functions
    • Angles and radian measure
    • Unit circle and the definition of trigonometric functions
    • Graphs of sine, cosine, and other trigonometric functions
    • Inverse trigonometric functions
  3. Unit 3: Analytic Trigonometry
    • Fundamental identities
    • Trigonometric equations
    • Sum and difference formulas
    • Multiple-angle and product-to-sum formulas
  4. Unit 4: Applications of Trigonometry
    • Law of Sines and Law of Cosines
    • Area of a triangle and applications in navigation
    • Polar coordinates and complex numbers
    • Vectors and their applications
  5. Unit 5: Systems of Equations and Inequalities
    • Solving linear and non-linear systems algebraically and graphically
    • Matrix operations and determinants
    • Applications in various fields
  6. Unit 6: Sequences, Series, and Probability
    • Arithmetic and geometric sequences
    • Series and summation notation
    • Binomial theorem
    • Basic probability and combinatorics
  7. Unit 7: Limits and an Introduction to Calculus

Grading Policy:

Grades will be determined based on the following components:

  • Homework- Regular assignments to reinforce daily lessons.
  • Quizzes:  - Short assessments to monitor understanding of recent topics.
  • Tests: - Major exams at the end of each unit.
  • Projects: - Individual or group projects to apply concepts to real-world scenarios.
  • Final Exam:  - A comprehensive exam covering all material from the course.

Classroom Expectations:

  1. Be Prepared: Bring all necessary materials, including your textbook, notebook, and calculator, to every class.
  2. Participate: Engage in discussions, ask questions, and collaborate with your peers.
  3. Complete Assignments: Submit homework and projects on time. Late work may result in a reduced grade.
