Other helpful suggestions:

  • Sing songs and nursery rhymes
  • Talk about objects - what they look like, how they feel, what they are used for, etc.
  • Talk about where thing are in your home using position words (in, on, under, etc.)
  • Read books that your child enjoys and engourage him/her to retell the story to you. As you are reading, ask simple 'wh' questions and help your child to respond verbally or through gestures.
  • Play simple games to encourage your child to follow directions.
  • Always encourage verbal responses that are compatible with your child's language abilities - single words, two word combinations, sentence.  Model correct sound production and encourage imitation.
  • Have your child help you with daily activities to work on sorting, sequencing (first, next, last), labeling, answering and asking questions, etc.  Hands on activities are motivating and fun!!
