Dear Family,

I have compiled a suggested reading list for second grade to assist families when selecting books for reading with their children. Many of these books can be found in our local library or at bookstores. Some of the titles on the list are great for children to read on their own, while others are perfect for reading aloud together. Reading is a life long journey and I hope the list provided will help in making selections for your child(ren) that they will enjoy. Happy reading!

Many second graders are beginning to use many strategies independently to figure out new words, including sounding out longer words and thinking about what makes sense in the sentence. They may be reading longer books and relying less on pictures to help them read the story. Books with familiar characters can help make thos transition into longer books easier. Pausing after every 2 or 3 pages to briefly retell what is happening can help your child as s/he keeps track of a longer story. Even though your child is becoming independent as a reader, it is still important to continue to read aloud books together. Listening to stories is a stress-free way to help your child build vocabulary and comprehension strategies. It is also a wonderful way to spend time together!
