Tips for Parents

* Make a daily schedule including activities that are both high and low energy. For example after writing sentences or doing a math lesson take a movement break

* If your child reaches his or her frustration level on a certain assignment stop and go back to it later.

* Balance your day with physical activity at least 20 minutes per day.

* Get organized.  Have a specific place to do work.  Make sure to have good lighting and no TV on.  Keep supplies readily available.

* Find a time to do work when there are minimal distractions from younger siblings and give your child your complete attention.

* Stay hydrated and take bathroom breaks.

* Go from paper and pencil activities to online.

* Guide your child and demonstrate when necessary what outcome you would like.  Ex- Write 2 sentences using 2 specific sight words.  You may model it and then put it away.

*  Praise your child often and give specific ways to improve an assignment,  ex- "I think we can make this neater" or "slow down and do your best".
