The ESL student curriculum is based on the NJ State Core Curriculum Content Standards, New Jersey's English Language Proficiency Standards, and WIDA Standards which all address the knowledge and skills needed by English Language Learners (ELLs) (also known as limited English proficient/ELLs)  to succeed linguistically as well as to become English proficient and enter regular academic content courses.  ESL class consists of a double period of ESL Language Arts, a double period of ESL Math,  ESL Science and ESL Social Studies.

 

English Language Proficiency Tests:

 

ACCESS for ELLs 2.0  Online Summative Assessment is given once a year to assesses each of the four language domains of Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.

 

 

Purpose and Use of ACCESS for ELLs 2.0

Wida Screener Test

 

  • A Wida Screener Test helps identify new ESL students
  • Access for ELLs 2.0 identifies a students’ current level of English language proficiency along the developmental continuum.
  • Access for ELLs 2.0 serves as one of the multiple measures used to determine whether students are prepared to exit English language support programs if they obtain a 4.5 or higher.
  • Access for ELLs 2.0 generates information that assists in determining whether ELLs have attained the language proficiency needed to participate meaningfully in content area classrooms without program support.
  • Access for ELLs 2.0 provides teachers with information they can subsequently use to enhance instruction and learning in programs for their English language learners.
  • Access for ELLs 2.0 meets, and exceeds, federal requirements for the monitoring and reporting of ELLs' progress toward English language proficiency.
