Agent Literacy

"Greetings! I am Dr. Henry Macoy (AKA Beast), it is so nice to meet you. The best knowledge one can gain is from reading a good book.  Agents in  fifth grade should be using contextual clues to predict and comprehend content.  Agents will be using their reading skills to gain meaning from a variety of texts.  It has been shown through studies that children who read for fun score higher on assessments.  Reading is how we input new knowledge into our brains!  Encourage your child to read, read, read!! "

Children should know the 9 kinds of questions and strategies:

  • Main Idea — Read for the 2W’s (Who and What).
  • Fact and Details — Dig for Details/Locate answers.
  • Right Order — Look for BEFORE, AFTER, FIRST, LAST.
  • Vocabulary — Context Clues to understand words.
  • Author’s Purpose — Why did the author write?
  • Plot and Conflict — Determine the Character, Problem, Resolution.
  • Compare and Contrast — Use the Venn Diagram.
  • Cause and Effect — Rewrite the question into a “Because sentence”.

STUDY TIP

One important Reading Strategy that will be a tremendous help in improving your child’s reading skills is what we call the CUCC Reading Strategy. This strategy can be used in both reading and in math.  Please see the separate tab on this website concerning how we use the CUCC Strategy.

Underlining and circling can be used on the standardized assessments, so we use that strategy as often as possible.  However, there are times we cannot actually use a pencil to underline or circle, such as when using textbooks or testing on the computer. At these times we can use highlighter tape or they just use their finger to point to and then say what would have been circled or underlined.
