Water Play
Wow the warm weather has finally arrived and it is a perfect time to enjoy water play outside with your child. There are so many wonderful opportunities to engage in water play both at home and when traveling to the pool, lake, or ocean. It is a natural avenue to work on variety of skills from tactile defensiveness to dressing, to arm and hand strengthening, to visual motor skill. I am not even going to mention the social, language, math, science, and problem solving experiences your child will be exposed to during this wonderful activity. Try some of these activities at home:
- Get into a bathing suit, strip down, and prepare for you and your child to be wet. This is a wonderful time to work on dressing and undressing skills without the pressure of getting out the door for school.
- Paint the house or driveway with a NEW paintbrush or roller. This is a great arm strengthening activity
- Have a toy car wash.
- Fill muck bucket (large bucket) and add cups, watering cans, spoons. Practice dumping water from one container to another, watch water drain through a funnel, or try and catch a ping pong ball with a slotted spoon.
- Wash doll’s clothing and hang it on the line. Mittens from 3 Little Kittens and washcloths also work
- Have fun squirting a floating object with a water gun, spray bottle or a squeeze toy that shoots water.
- Have Fun
It has been my joy “playing” with your child this school year. Have a wonderful Summer.
