WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH

Women's History Month is observed every March in the United States.  As recently as the 1970’s, women’s history was virtually an unknown topic in the K-12 curriculum or in general public consciousness. Before women had the whole month, the U.S. recognized Women's History Week; before that, a single International Women's Day.

Dedicating the whole month of March in honor of women's achievements may seem irrelevant today. But at the time of the conception of Women's History Week, activists saw the designation as a way to revise a written and social American history that had largely ignored women's contributions.  To learn about the history of Women's History Month, read biographies of famous women, find stats and facts about women, and more in the following sites to use in the classroom or family activities:

Important Dates


*Mar. 2: Read Across America Day (National). Students, parents and teachers, join forces annually on this day in March each year to promote reading especially for children and young adults. This observance coincides with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, a popular children’s book author.


*Mar. 4: Women’s World Day of Prayer (Multi-faith).  A tradition since 1887, this is a global, ecumenical movement of women joined together to observe a common day of prayer each year on the first Friday of March. The movement aims to bring together women of various races, cultures and traditions in a yearly common day of prayer, as well as in closer fellowship, understanding and action throughout the year.


*Mar. 17: St. Patrick’s Day (Christian). Observance in honor of St Patrick, He is the patron saint of Ireland who brought Christianity to Ireland in the early days of the faith.
