Dear Parents:
We started discussing and creating our classroom rules, discussing consequences for breaking rules and rewards for appropriate behavior. I expect that every student follow these rules in order to learn. In their homework folder, you will find the students daily behavior earned for the day. If stamped yellow or red, please speak with your child about their behavior and steps necessary to improve it. In addition, please initial your child’s behavior for the day. Below please find the behavior rubric.

A Day in Kindergarten

|
Collect homework and count how many children are going to eat the school lunch. Sent the attendance bobble sheet to the office.
Opening Exercises:
- Sing Good Morning or any greeting songs
- Complete the calendar: date, season, climate, temperature in Spanish

Getting Ready to Read / Read and Comprehension
Concept Talk:
- Using some recasting, self-correction and peer correction to discuss the big question of the week: example: what unique thing does a bear do in the winter?
- Activating prior knowledge through use of visuals: pictures, posters and videos.
Introducing Amazing Words:
- Reading a list of amazing words.
- Pointing to visuals representing these words.
- Reading /singing a song or rhyme a few times to identify the amazing words.
Phonemic Awareness:
- Identifying and discriminating words with same initial, medial, or final sounds.
- Using photo cards of things with the same initial, medial, or final sounds.
- Brainstorming words with same initial sound to create chart and webs.
- Underlining same initial, medial, or final sounds.
- Drawing /cut and paste pictures to represent these words.
Phonic:
- Recognize letter partners. (a letter uppercase and its lowercase)
- Observing and practicing letter formation-Uppercase and lowercase.
- Associating a letter sound with its spelling. The sound /k/ spell c.
Blend Words:
- Blending and reading words with the same initial sound. For instance, blending word with /k/ cat, can, car, etc.
- Reviewing sound-spellings for previous letters.
- Clapping and counting syllables
- Using simple musical instrument to count syllables

Read and Comprehension / Small Group
Read aloud:
- Listening to the book of the week
- Identifying the book as a nonfiction / fiction
- Describing the characters and setting
- Sequencing the events
- Retelling the story to show comprehension
- Reviewing the amazing words / oral vocabulary words.
Guided Reading / Small Groups
Guided Reading:
The teacher read with a group of 5 children to teach them various reading strategies.
Small Groups:
- Students can complete a journal entry about any they would like to write.
- Students can read in pair familiar guided reading books.
- Students can also read big books from our library on the rug. They also work on the words wall, reading around the room, listening to book on the listening center, and other literacy games.
- Students go to www.startfall.com to read and listen to books. They also work on other phonological awareness activities.

Language Arts / Writing:
- Students learn about grammatical terms such as proper noun, noun, objective, etc.
- Grammar Jammers videos are shown to introduce these terms.
- Visuals and realia are used to represent these terms. For example, pictures of different people are used to teach proper nouns.
- The classroom materials and furniture are used to represent nouns.

- Students learn letter formation, capitalization and punctuation.
- Students learn about various writing genres and complete the writing assignment indicated on the weekly lesson plan.
- Students write about anything they want on their journals.
- Students present their writing piece to their classmates. Their classmates listen and ask question to the speaker.

Interdisciplinary Studies:
- New terms are introduced by reading a big book based on Science or Social Studies terms in Spanish. For instance, books about family members, school, weather, seasons, community helpers, animals, and health topics.
- Several Science activities are completed throughout the year such as planting, observing inside a pumpkin, Five Senses activities, Magnet activities, Classifying and sorting activities.
