Chinese New Year                          

Essential Question:  Why do we study different cultures

 

Learning Objective: Gr 2-3.:  I can tell when Chinese New Year is and explain some of

                                                   the ways in which it is celebrated.

 

NJCCCS:              

SOC.6.1.4.D.13      Describe how culture is expressed through and influenced by the

                                            behavior of people.

 

Instructional Activities   - show map of China      

                                         - read "Celebrate Chinese New Year" with the class

                                         - create paper lanterns

                                         - with a partner complete graphic organizer

 

 


 

 

The Diwali (pronounced di-VAH-lee) Gift                                

 

Essential Question:  Why do we study different cultures?

 

Learning objective:  Gr K-1:   I can identify some ways that the people of India

                                                 celebrate Diwali (pronounced di-VAH-lee).

 

NJCCCS:              

SOC.6.1.4.D.13      Describe how culture is expressed through and influenced by the

                                            behavior of people.

 

Instructional Activities       

  • show map of India.
  • Background:  Explain that people all over the world have special times when they celebrate themes and events that are important to them. Discuss how in India one of the major holidays is Diwali, or the Hindu New Year. 
  • Tell students that Diwali (pronounced di-VAH-lee) is celebrated in late October or early November.  In 2016 Diwali is on October 30.  In 2017 Diwali is on October 19.
  • read "The Diwali Gift" aloud with the children.

 Homes In Many Cultures              

 

Essential Question:  What can homes from around the world teach us about the people

                                 who live in them?

 

Learning Objective:  Gr K-1:  I can tell what makes home all over the world the same as mine.

 

NJCCCS:

SOC.6.1.4.D.20   Describe why it is important to understand the perspectives of other

                           cultures in an interconnected world.

 

Instructional Activities

  • show various cultures' homes in this PPT .  Predict where in the world they might be. 
  • read the story, "Homes In Many Cultures"
  • show videos:

  •       Houses around the world video
  •       Different Kinds of Houses (stone, wood, mud) video
