Grading Standards (Honors level 9-12):
- Major assessment: 45%
-
Minor assessment: 30%
-
Classwork: 10%
-
Homework: 15%
Homework Benefits (within my class)
- review materials
- reinforce skills
- prepare for an upcoming class activity/assignment
- extend or generalize concepts or skills
- offer opportunities for the student to integrate, extend, or creatively apply skills already learned in class
Homework Policy
Homework will be given on a nightly basis.
- Due dates: For all standard homework, assignments will be due at the start of the next class. All material is expected to be finished and handed in at the start of class.
- Late Work: I do not accept any late work…at all!
Homework Passes
- Students will receive 4 homework passes at the start of each marking period.
- When the passes are used for the marking period, no late homework will be accepted.
- Papers and Projects are considered "Minor/Major Assessments" and the homework rule does not apply.
Long-term Assignments
Papers and projects will receive two grades: a homework grade and an actual project grade. If papers or projects are handed in late, a letter grade will be taken each day it is late from the project grade. The homework grade will also suffer a deduction in points as well.
Collaborative Work (Classwork)
Collaborative work is a large part of the class, so it is essential that all students are equally participating and contributing within small groups. Students will receive credit for the work they complete in class. Depending on the activity requirements, students may be scored as a group, or individually. If students are not prepared at the start of class, they will not be able to engage in group work.
Extension Activities
Extension Activities will be available throughout the year. The options for this work will change with each unit, but they essentially are extra credit opportunities. Students may work on the Extension Activities during any free time. At the end of each marking period, the work will be collected and additional points will be given based off the assignment selection(s).
Student Success Tips:
Students are responsible for staying on top of the homework. To help stay organized, students should:
- Listen Up: pay attention to all instructions of activities; this means, minimize distractions (talking and phones).
- Communicate: ask any questions about the assignment before leaving class and reach out if they need any help.
- Be Prepared: Come to class each day prepared and take home all material needed to complete your work for the night.
Homework is important to class, to make it easier, make sure to:
- Specific Time: set aside a special time in which to do the assignment.
- Specific Space: have a special place to work free from excessive noise and other distractions.
- Specific Schedule: create a plan for completing the homework, including long term assignments, follow the plan!
Communication
I encourage students to communicate with me regarding assignments directions, text comprehension, or grade calculations. Ado vacating for one's self is a lifelong skill that is essential to success. I encourage students to speak with me during class first and foremost. Email and private notifications are also a great way to communicate any questions or comments they may have.
The best way for parents and guardians to contact me is directly through email.
