READING
There is lots of reading going on in B-8!
Independant Reading - Independant Reading takes place every day as part of Reading Workshop. The boys and girls may choose books they want to read from our classroom library and from their own reading group books. We try to read books that are just right -- not too hard, and not too easy!
Read Aloud -- These books are selections from our seasonal and holiday books, books that show a style of writing that we are trying during Writing Workshop, and great literature from our school library.
Shared Reading - takes place in the morning. We all read the same piece and then complete an activity that uses the skill or strategy that is being taught.
Guided Reading -- Guided Reading groups may be very flexible, seeing how the various groups are handling the different instructional levels. In second grade, the instruction certainly involves decoding of the words, but there is a strong emphasis on comprehension and responding both orally and in writing. We spend much more time on each level of book working on the various strategies.
Reading Logs - Each night, the boys and girls should write down on their Reading Log what they have read. I check them in just as I do their homework pages. I check for each night's reading. If they do not read, they owe me reading -- either on the next night or over the weekend!!
WRITING
Writing Workshop- We have writing workshop every afternoon. The students learn to write for a variety of purposes. We publish several pieces through the year. We share our published pieces at a publishing party at the end of the year.
