Writing is also done in class before we begin our personal narrative.  Setting up our writing workshop enables us to have fun and explore writing different short stories!

Personal Narrative- here you will rely on your schema (your experiences) to write about an event that was memorable.

Opinion Writing-  In this unit the student will tell about his or her thoughts and feelings about a topic that they feel strongly about.  It is helpful if the studnent can "get into the head" of the reader while they write this.  Doing this will help their position and make them sound thoughtful.

Expository Nonfiction- This is where we write reports about a coountry or a person.  In this unit the student needs to learn how to take notes from another source.  Their notes will then be turned onto free-flowing and supportive thoughts.  Taking notes then turing them in to free-flowing and supportive thoughts takes practice.

Fiction- this is the storywriting portion of the year.  It is important that the student plans well with not only the normal elements like problem and solution but now a failure included in their story to make it seem more dramatic and realistic.

If time permits.

Functional Writing-  In this unit of writing students will read and discuss recipes and directions, explore craft elements of functional writing, and write directions for others to follow. They explore using modal auxiliaries, such as can, may, and must, in their directions.
