Mrs. RothmanÅ› 6th Grade Science Class

Course Syllabus

Introduction:

My name is Mrs. Rothman and I will be your 6th grade science teacher. Just a little background information about myself… I have been teaching in Pleasantville for 26 years. This is my fourth year at the Middle School. This is my sixth year teaching science so I am looking forward to learning not only about you and the exciting things you did this summer but with you as we explore science together. I hold teaching certifications in elementary education and have my masters in the art of teaching. I am a graduate of Georgian Court and Marygrove College .

Course Overview (major topics, assignments & assessments):

Our science curriculum gives students the opportunity for in-depth, hands-on learning touching on new and different subject matter in each grade. The instructional units for 6th grade include:http://school.discoveryeducation.com/clipart/images/coolscnc.gif

Unit 1: Light and Matter

Unit 2: Thermal Energy

Unit 3: Weather, Climate and Water Cycling

Unit 4: Plate Tectonics and Rock Cycling

Each unit has been designed to introduce students to rigorous science content that correlates with the Next Generation Science Standards through hands-on investigation and problem solving activities. Each unit will include informational videos, individual and group investigations, quizzes and a culminating benchmark exam. Although quiz and test scores are an important factor in your end-of-course grade, the process of gaining knowledge is equally important. Therefore, observation, participation, and classwork also play an important part in your grade.

Materials/Resources:

Students will be exposed to a variety of educational resources throughout the school year including our new McGraw-Hill digital Science textbook and interactive websites. These materials will be provided to students as needed.

Although not required, I would recommend students have a notebook which will be useful for note taking, practice problems and brainstorming.

Grading:

Science grades will be generated using the Pleasantville School District grading policy. Please note all information regarding grading policies can also be found in your student handbook.

The district grading policy is as follows:

The gradebook will be broken down following the district guidelines listed here:

       Science

  • Classwork- 10%

  • Homework-5%

  • Assessments-25%

  • Performance Assessments/ Project Based Assessments-25%

  • End of Cycle Assessment-15%

  • Quizzes 20%

Procedures:

  • Science meets on an A/B schedule which means you will be required to be present for science class every other day, alternating with social studies. Your assigned days and time are based on which class period you are enrolled in. You can reference the calendar for the A/B schedule.

  • Students are required to make up all work they miss if absent. This includes being absent from school for the day and/or missing the class period for any reason. It is the responsibility of the student to find out what work needs to be made up.
