Parents here are some prompts for you to use as you are reading the weekly story each night with your child:
Ask your child..............
Before you Read-
Can you point to the author’s name?
Can you point to the Illustrator’s name?
Can you make a prediction about this story?
What did you use to make your prediction?
Do you see anything that makes you want to change your prediction?
What do you think is going to happen next? Why do you think that?
After the story-
Start from the beginning can you tell me what happened in the story? (Sequence)
What happened FIRST, NEXT, THEN, & LAST?
What was the GENRE of this story?
Fiction, Nonfiction, Realistic Fiction, Folktale
Who are the characters in this story?
Who is the main character?
What is the setting of the story?
What is the PLOT? ->What is the most important thing that happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story?
Was there a problem in this story? (Conflict)
If so how did the problem get solved? (Solution)
Why do you think the author wrote this story?
Does this story remind you of anything about YOU? Why?
Does this story remind you about any other book? Why?
Does this story remind you of anything that happened in the world? (TV, news, internet, etc.)
