Dear 5th Graders,
I hope you are all having a wonderful summer! I wanted to take the time to welcome you to 5th grade. This will be a busy year filled with learning. I am hoping we will have some fun along the way as well! I would like to give you a preview of our year.
In math we will be exploring some areas you have visited before as well as many new topics. We will be exploring topics in a traditional method and some creative ways too! Math is a puzzle waiting to be solved. We will be stretching our minds and bending our brains. Who knew math could be so much fun?
How do we learn about the past? We think like a historian, of course! In social studies we will be traveling back in time to learn about early native civilizations. Then we will sail on to learn about who explored our great nation. We will celebrate some important dates like September 11th and September 17th. Why do we celebrate the 17th of September?
We will take one step at a time in science too. We will begin by learning the steps of the Scientific Method. Then we will take a "systematic" approach to learning about Ecosystems and other earth systems. We will be exploring living and nonliving matter and how they make up our changing earth and determine what makes each one successful and necessary. Why does science "matter"? We will find out when we dive into some chemistry to learn what causes matter to change. Finally, we may tap into our solar system to find out how the moon and stars move in patterns and effect the earth! What a journey! Buckle up!
There will also be many opportunities to expand ourselves as people. Check out Eisenhower Enrichments. There are plenty of chances to expand and apply your math, science, art, technology, and physical skills. Become involved in character education by being in the Student Council! Play an instrument! Join the chorus or choir!
This is just the beginning of our journey together. A famous person once said, "Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success." To whom does this famous quote belong?
I look forward to meeting each and every one of you. If you prefer to be called by a name different than the one on the attendance list, please email me as soon as possible with the correct spelling of the name you would like me to place on your name tag, books, and locker. I can't wait to see you on September 2nd!
Enjoy the rest of your summer,
Mrs. Popadiuk
