Technical Writing

 

 

 

  

 

1.  Course Description:  This course includes the skills in verbal and written communication that students will need to be successful in the workplace. Students will know and use the terminology in their chosen field of work. They will understand, summarize, interpret, and compare information from simple and complex graphics to identify trends and to make informed decisions. They will also demonstrate proficiency in writing and presentation skills by producing different technical writing products, including formal research reports, formal presentations, and workplace writing (e.g., technical reports, manuals, explanations of how to understand or use a product or service, proposals, memoranda, cover letters).

 

2.  Course Prerequisite:   Business English.

 

3.  Attendance Policy:   Attendance is mandatory for this subject.  The teacher will follow rules as given by Bolton and the Rapides Parish School Board for absences. 

 

4.   Fee:  $10.00 Business Fee. This fee covers computer lab expenses including paper, ink, supplies for special projects, etc.         

                                                                    

5.  Grading Procedure:   All grades do not carry the same weight.  According to the RPSB, the following categories and weights will be implemented.

a. Tests – 50%

b. Daily Assignment & Production Work – 40%

c. Projects/Homework – 10%

 

6.  Grading Policy:  The Rapides Parish grading scale will be used. 

 A -  100 - 93   

 B -    92 - 85            

 C -    84 - 75      

 D -    74 - 67

 F  - 66 and below

 

7.  Supplies:   

Notebook or binder w/pockets

Loose-leaf paper

Pen and Pencil (regular or mechanical)

$10.00 Class fee.

 

8.  Classroom Procedures:

a.  Please be in your assigned seat and ready to work by the tardy bell.  A detention will be assigned for being tardy. Tardiness will not be tolerated.  BE ON TIME!

b.  Follow all Rapides Parish School Board and Bolton High School policies.

c.  Follow all classroom procedures.

d.  Please bring all materials needed for class when you enter the room.

e.  Be prepared to remain in the classroom, except for emergencies.  The teacher will identify emergencies. However, each student will be given one (1) emergency pass each nine weeks.

f.  Students who are absent must make up all work missed within five (5) days after returning to school.  Failure to do so within the allotted time allowed by RPSB will result in a zero.

g.  Use of the Internet is not permitted unless specifically instructed by the teacher.

h. Only use your laptop and ear phones/buds in the classroom with permission.

i.  Students must maintain standard defaults unless instructed otherwise.  Each computer software program comes with defaults pre-assigned and changing these defaults will not be tolerated.  Exploration of, use of, or changes made to any other menus will result in disciplinary measures.

 

9.  Behavior Expectations:

a. Be ready.

b. Be responsible.

c. Be respectful.

d. Be safe.

 

10.  Consequences for Disciplinary Infractions:

a. Warning

b. Discussion & Noncompliance Reflection

c. Phone Call & Detention

d. Referral

Note:  These consequences will follow in order unless an action is deemed severe.  In this event, the consequence will immediately move to match the action.
