MRS. VERCHER’S 2018-2019 SOCIAL STUDIES SYLLABUS    (SENT HOME THE FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL TO BE SIDNED BY PARENT)

6TH GRADE PROCEDURES, RULES, AND REGULATIONS (p. 1 of 5)

Dear Parents,

I am looking forward to teaching your children this year.  It was a pleasure seeing so many of you at sixth grade orientation/open house.  Your support and cooperation were greatly appreciated.  It is my hope that this letter will aid you in helping your child prepare for my class.  I will try to follow the routine established below as closely as possible so you will know what I expect from the students.  I believe in your children and our community.  Working together, we can be assured your child can and will be successful!  PLEASE REVIEW THIS SYLLABUS WITH YOUR CHILD AND SEE TO IT THAT HE/SHE UNDERSTANDS IT.

SIXTH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES (WORLD HISTORY) COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Sixth grade social studies students will examine the ancient world from Pre-history through the Age of Exploration using the current social studies standards from Louisiana State Department of Education (Louisiana Believes). While examining the history of the ancient world, students will analyze the connections among geography, government, culture, and economics. All students will acquire the knowledge and skills to think and write analytically and systematically about how past interactions of people, cultures, and the environment affect issues across time and cultures. Students will also develop critical process skills for communication, researching, citing evidence, assessing issues, problem solving, decision-making, and taking civic action.  Such knowledge and skills enable students to make informed decisions as socially and ethically responsible world citizens in the 21st century.

Social studies materials:  --All items should have students name and hour on them.

--Two Yellow three prong folders with pockets (one for Notes and one for Bell                                                        Ringers; Notes folder should be filled with loose leaf paper).

--Extra paper and yellow folders may need to be replaced throughout the year.

--Ticonderoga pencils (NO mechanical pencils please) to use throughout the year

--One pack (8 or more) of Colored Sharpie permanent markers will be needed for                                   creating Medieval Activities/Projects in the Spring so buy now while on sale and keep                                          markers at home until needed.

--Bring School Student Planner (parents should look at student planner
every afternoon, checking for test dates and making sure the planner is
completely filled out by your child) and Blue Folder (for progress reports and other                       important information) to class daily

--NO social studies instruction fee required.

Textbooks:  World History Journey Across Time The Early Ages --This textbook will be assigned to the student by the library, and they may keep it at home until the end of the school year (students must return books if they move to another school during the school year).  Please remind your child to write their name in it if they had not written it yet.  If there is a shortage of books, some students may have to bring their books back and forth between home and school (the library should have enough).  I will instruct the students to bring back and forth if needed when books are assigned by the library at the beginning of the year.  Most years all students keep them at home.  We will also use social studies books to use as resources in class.

Movies:  "PG" rated and "G" rated movies and/or clips may be viewed throughout the year.  If you would prefer your child to have an alternative assignment, please write a note in the comment section of the parent signature form attached within this document.

To assist your child in being successful in social studies, please refer to your child’s student planner each night.  The idea of the planner is to instill responsibility in your child.  Some students need help with organization skills. It is helpful if parents check folders, notebooks, binders, etc., to make certain students are keeping their subject (CONTINUED ON—PAGE 2 )

materials separated into the correct folder, especially at the beginning of school.  Students should be reviewing class information/handouts/notes at home daily in preparation for upcoming tests.  It is your child’s responsibility to write test dates and home learning (homework) in his/her planner.  It is also your child's responsibility to show parents their progress report (and any parent requested test) in blue folder and return it to school signed.  Students should record graded tests in the back of their planner, each week.  Your child will have time to complete the work in class

If it appears that your child is not completing the assignment, this would be a good indication that he/she is not working in class.  Students will be given grades on the assessments of:  participation, cooperative group, practice LEAP 2025/Eagle tests, projects/assignments/rubrics, individual home projects/research(A list of individual home projects and dates will be student written in planner so please check planners weekly.), vocabulary tests, map tests, bell ringer tests  (students will have one question with four answer choices to write daily, please check their bell ringer folder to see that they are not behind.  They may catch up before school if needed), chapter tests, unit tests, comprehensive exams and the end of the year final exam (the final exam counts as one-fifth of your child’s yearly average so keep all notes), reports, and/or activities/projects, etc., throughout the school year to meet the social studies comprehensive curriculum/Standards/GLEs in preparation for the standardized testing in the spring. Students will have at least two days notice on all tests with possibly the exception of open book/notes tests and cooperative learning activities.  It is necessary that students be prepared for class and are responsible for completing and keeping up with all notes, study guides and/or assignments.  Again, please check your child’s student planner for dates of tests and assignments.  Also, please remember that Tuesday is blue folder day and progress reports will be sent home the Tuesday after the 5th week of the nine weeks grading period. These progress reports must be signed (signed by Friday of the week received) by parent and returned or student may receive a detention.  Report cards will be sent home once a nine weeks.

Students will vote and elect a social studies class president, vice-president and/or secretary in each class to assist in various classroom activities (pass out and collect students’ tests/papers on Tuesday and Wednesday, etc).  All progress reports (NOT REPORT CARDS) and parent requested tests should be signed and returned the next day. Students should record all grades in the back of their planner.  Also, please keep in mind, it is EXTREMELY important that when a student is absent that he/she ask for work assigned if absent.  Make-up tests will be on the “MAKE-UP WORK” bulletin board.  All students are responsible for making up all assigned class tests, study guides, reports, projects, etc.  Grade Recovery is to be completed at home and turned into the Grade Recovery drawer in the classroom.  I am usually here at school by 7:55 so students can make up their social studies test in the morning before school or during PASS (Panther Academic strategies session) in 1st hour.

  1. All parish, school, and class rules apply and will be enforced.
  2. There are two major expectations for all students in my class: They are to demonstrate respect and responsibility at all times. Each class period will discuss what this is going to look like in this classroom.  We will also discuss the classroom and  school-wide PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports) rules (follow Panther Pride, Integrity, Respect) and consequences.  These rules and consequences will be discussed the first day of school and reinforced throughout the year.  PBIS rules and consequences are posted and students are expected to follow them.
  3.  I have always found parents to be very supportive of good classroom behavior so their child has a good environment for maximum learning.  Sixth grade students will be participating in the School-Wide PBIS plan this year from the administration.  Students who exhibit good behavior will also be allowed to participate in classroom PBIS rewards once a six weeks during the social studies and science block. PBIS activities may

include "PG" rated and "G" rated movies and/or clips, board games, sno-cones, art, etc.)  Parent volunteers welcome (must be approved by RPSB guidelines) for PBIS!  Behavior may also reflect the ability to attend

field trips.  Our annual field trip to Medieval Times in the Spring is a 6th grade Buckeye tradition, and we would like for as many students as possible to attend so remind your child of rules and good behavior.  The estimated cost of the trip is about $125.00 per participant.  So begin saving now!  More information about field trips will be sent home at a later date by the sixth grade team of teachers.

  1. Attendance/Tardy: Statistics show that students who attend school regularly learn more and are more

successful in school than students who do not attend regularly.  Please encourage your child to attend school
daily and be on time for class.  Students should be in their seat, materials ready and immediately working on

daily bell ringer when the tardy bell rings.  Students who arrive after the tardy bell without an admit are
considered late for class and may receive a tardy slip (which is turned into the office).  Students who are
habitually tardy may receive a detention and/or a referral.  All students must be signed in at the Jr. High office

by a parent when they are late for school.

  1. Make-up Work:  All assignments must be completed and turned in.  All make-up/absentee assignments/study guides/tests/ projects/ reports should be made up before the end of the nine weeks grading period or it may count as a zero, and this “F” grade  may greatly affect your child’s  report card grade.
  2. A minimum of 7 grades will be given per 9 weeks).  As many tests will be given on Scantron (bubble sheets), students should write the weekly grades in the back of their planners under the correct nine weeks.  Parents may write a note if you feel it is warranted to see the test, and I will send it home with your child.  Students should then have you sign it and return the next day to me.  It is your child’s responsibility to make certain that he/she writes their weekly test grades in their planners.  It is also your child's responsibility to show parents their graded test(s) and return it to school signed the next day.
  3. GRADE RECOVERY:  If your child makes an "F" on any test paper, they may write an informational essay on a topic from the test (topic found within their social studies textbook) to bring their grade up from an F to a 67%/ D.  The written assignment must be handwritten and be written in the students on words.  It is to include 3 paragraphs (students with IEPs and extended time may write 2 paragraphs), and all paragraphs must contain 5 or more sentences per paragraph (Students with limited writing skills with a doctor's diagnosis may see me for an alternative assignment).  Students have one week from the original return test date (so make certain that if your child is absent that he/she checks on their test grade from that particular week or check power school parent portal for grades!) to turn in the summary essay.  Since students usually (except for holidays, severe weather, etc.) see their graded test on Tuesdays, grade recovery should be submitted by the following Tuesday (this gives seven nights including an entire weekend to complete the make-up assignment at home).
  4. Progress reports are sent home after the 4th week of each nine weeks regardless of the grades in the blue folders.  Please sign and return.  ALL STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE A PROGRESS REPORT REGARDLESS OF GRADE!

The 6th grade grading scale is:  100 - 93….= A             92 - 85 ……= B

                                                       84 - 75….= C             74 - 67…….= D

                                                             66 - below= F

8.   If you have internet, you may also check your child’s grades in Parent Portal in Power School.  You may sign
up and get your password in the Jr. High Office (Driver’s License/picture I.D. required).  And please visit our
school website and/or Facebook page often for important event information.
