Our first grade reading foundations skills are being pulled from our Heggerty Phonemic Awareness series. Spelling and Phonics will come from our Journeys Reading series.  We will cover different phonics skills each week however, we do not forget about previously learned skills. We will continuously build on learned skills with new skills. Phonics skills are the basis for learning to read.

 

Students will have a weekly spelling test.  However, we will not have a spelling list on the Home Learning page.  We do not want students to simply memorize the words for a test.  We want to test the children on the focused phonics skill for the week.  The Home Learning page will list the phonics skill for the week with a couple of sample words.  There may also be suggestions for practicing the skill of the week.
