I am excited to be teaching your child both reading and writing. We will be continuing the Lucy Calkin's program where the children learn strategies to improve their reading and writing. Since the children had extensive teaching of the writing process with Mrs. Leone, they will be using those strategies to further enhance their reading and writing to prepare them for middle school.
Vocabulary Workshop is a new addition to the sixth-grade curriculum. This program will enable students to acquire the vocabulary and strategies critical for academic success in the 21st century. The children will learn words rich in context and then practice using them in engaging activities. Assignments and quizzes will be given. They will also have access to an online site where they can use the words in an interactive way to help them master their understanding. There are a total of 300 words that your child will be responsible for learning. Some of these words will also be seen in 7th grade as they take part in their program called Membean.
Each month, every student will be required to complete eight Kid Biz articles of their choice on Achieve 3000. At the end of the month, they will be averaged and a cumulative grade will be given,
We have a classroom library where children will be able to select a "just right" book according to their level and enjoy time reading. The children are encouraged to use the many sites available to download books as well, They will have the opportunity to read independently and develop the love of reading throughout the day. Both whole-class novels. mentor texts and independent reading will be part of the ELA classes.

My number one goal for each child is to enable them to become avid readers, writers, and inquirers through a novel based curriculum. During the year, children are given the opportunity to live, work and learn as writers by observing the world around them while collecting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing well-written narrative and expository texts. While reading the many novels, the children will learn to become better thinkers and analyzers to fully understand what is being read.
