Wow! The first month of school flew by!  It has been a pleasure to get to know one another.

Reading Our focus in reading is on identifying characters, their traits, setting, and main problem/solution in various stories.  Students are participating in whole class and small group lessons.

We are currently reading the fictional chapter book The Trumpet of the Swan written by  Prior to reading each chapter, students are called on to recap the most important events of the previous chapter. The purpose of the read aloud is to build vocabulary and identify the elements of plot.  As I read, I display the text on the smartboard using the doc camera.

Writing  In writing, the students have listened to a variety of short stories and poems.  Using these stories, the students have had the opportunity to write a magic story, poetry, and a story through the perspective of an animal.

Math We are currently practicing multi-digit addition and subtraction problems. Our Topic 2 test is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7th.  The Family Engagement letter outlines the objectives and skills for each lesson within the topic.

Students are successfully working in small groups to complete their math workshop tasks. Assignments have included:  completing workbook pages, researching stem and pick-a-projects, playing games, and meeting with Mrs. Houser

Science  The students are currently studying plant structures and how they help the plant.  They conducted a celery investigation to explore the vascular system of the celery's stem.
