Accelerated Reader
Forth Graders may check out 3 books at a time. One of these books may be a pleasure book. Students may only test on books that are on their AR levels. Each quarter the teacher and student will assign a point goal for the student. Point goals are very attainable if reading is focused on nightly.

Frequently asked questions about the Acclerated Reader Program
How are AR reading levels and point goals determined?
At the beginning of the year students take a STAR test which is part of the AR program. Based on the accuracy of
the student's choices AR reading levels as well as a point goal are assigned.
How is the ZPD determined?
The STAR test also consists of students reading sentences with missing words. Based on accuracy of
the students choices the computer assigns the ZPD.
What Level AR book is my child reading?
The ZPD or Zone of Proximal Development shows students what level books they may check out. Students are to stay
within this book range. Students start at the lowest end of the ZPD and move towards the higher end of the zone throughout the quarter.
***Here is an example of a ZPD 3.3-4.8 A student working in this range will start at 3.3 books and work towards
4.8 books by the end of the quarter.***
The first number indicates the grade level, the second number is the month of the school year.
For example: 4.3 stands for third month of forth grade.
What types of books will my child read this year?
Students will be reading from many different types of genres. Biographies, fiction, nonfiction, poetry, historical
fiction as well as chapter books will be enjoyed this year.

Media Center on their reading levels.
