COURSE DESCRIPTION: A health science technician course that is intended to prepare the student to function successfully in the role of pharmacy technician in both community and hospital pharmacies. This course will prepare the student to take the Pharmacy Board exam after graduation.
COURSE PREREQUISITE:
Must be a graduating senior.
Must turn 18 by July 1st of your graduating year
Must have a min. overall GPA of 2.5, and min. GPA of 3.0 in science and math course
Must have a min. ACT of 20 or if they have not taken the ACT yet, then a min. GPA of 3.2 is required
Successful completion of Healthcare Science or Medical Terminology
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
- Describe the roles and functions of and duties of the pharmacy technician.
- Demonstrate knowledge of federal and state pharmacy laws and regulations
- Define the career options available to the student based on the training received.
- Demonstrate familiarity with the brand names and generic names of various drugs for a variety of diseases, illnesses, and disorders. Filling the Mediation order
- Identify the drug categories of a variety of drugs encountered in the daily clinical environment.
- Perform mathematical calculations and define mathematical terminology.
- Explain safety concerns and issues that might be encountered in the pharmacy.
- Demonstrate a professional demeanor as appropriate for the position of the pharmacy technician.

Supplies: 2in Binder, loose leaf paper, 1pk sheet protectors, 3 plastic prong folder with pockets, 200pk of index cards, $1 store calculator (no scientific calc. allowed) pen, pencil, highlighters, flash drive, headphones.
OTHER MATERIAL: Various other references will be available for your use in this class, hardcopy as well as computer generated, such as PDR, Facts and Comparisons, medical dictionaries, computers, pharmacy tech certification exam review and more. Please treat these with the same respect you would want others to treat your own belongings, as any medically oriented material is costly!
