ATTENDANCE:

School attendance is important for student achievement, social development, and for building a strong foundation for learning. Research shows that students who attend school regularly are more likely to succeed academically, graduate on time, and find good jobs. One study found that students who missed 10% of kindergarten, or about 18 days, had lower test scores and were more likely to struggle in later grades.

Washington Township Schools believes that regular attendance is critical to its educational mission. Continuity of instruction is an essential element in student performance and allows for the greatest opportunity to meet or exceed the required learning standards for each grade and content area (New Jersey Student Learning Standards). Additionally, the district is required to report absences to the state, and our goal is to achieve or exceed ninety percent attendance rate required by the New Jersey DOE and New Jersey Quality Single Accountability Continuum (NJQSAC).

In accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A: 38-25, and Board Policy 5200, every parent or guardian shall cause the child to regularly attend school. A student must be in attendance for 170 days or more in order to be considered to have successfully completed the requirements of a grade. Unexcused absences will count toward truancy. Principals (or their designees) have been instructed to send letters home if your child has five unexcused absences, and again if there are more than ten absences. For additional details, please refer to the attendance policy found here - Attendance Policy.

However, if your child will be absent for any reason, please be sure to report the absence, late arrival, or early dismissal via Pickup Patrol as soon as possible.

Homework

Home study is a necessary part of each student’s educational program.  Each student is expected to spend some time working at home, in addition to class instruction, to achieve satisfactory work.  Some assignments may be long term in nature, which require planning ahead.

The use of an agenda is an easy and effective way for both students and parents to plan accordingly. If you are unsure about the scheduled homework for math, please check Google Classroom for that day. In the box, at the bottom, under HW, the assignment name will be listed. Sometimes there will be a pdf of the assignment unless it is work to be done online.

Missing Work

Each child should be responsible for completing assignments on time, as well as coming to class prepared each day.  Lack of preparation, late work, and/or incomplete assignments may result in a lower grade.  It is the responsibility of the student to obtain any necessary make-up work for completion. Google Classroom is most helpful when trying to locate an assignment.

Student Support Time is a flexible time built into the schedule daily.  This is a great time for students to see teachers for make-up work or extra help as needed.

Grading

Grades are averaged based on a point system.

A few things to note:

•The value of assignments varies depending on the content, material, level of difficulty, and amount of work required.

•The total number of points offered in a marking period varies depending on the number of points graded and their values.

•Grades are calculated by dividing the student’s total earned points by the total possible points and multiplying by 100.
