Parents-
You have probably heard a lot about teaching your child the “high frequency” words or “sight words”. These are the 100 or so most commonly used words in printed language. They are often difficult for early readers because they are phonetically irregular (they can’t be sounded out). For example, “there” is not “theer” and “could” is not “cold”. They also have no visual correspondence or easily understood definitions. But, they are essential for readers and knowing these words allows the reader to read quickly and fluently.
The best way to learn high frequency words is through memorization and repetition. Children need to read and write these words every day (which they are doing in school). You know a word is memorized when the child can read and spell the word. Some other ideas to reinforce memorization are:
- Use plastic/magnetic letters to spell high frequency words.
- Each time they “master” a word have them write it down on a word list and they will be proud as they watch it grow.
- Create flashcards and play Memory (you will need 2 flashcards for each word), lay them face down on the floor and take turns trying to match identical words.
- Play “funny voices”- show your child the flashcard and have them read it in a robot voice, squeaky voice, monster voice, etc.
- Go outside and have your child use chalk or a paintbrush dipped in water to write words.
- Have them spell the words while jumping rope, dribbling a ball, passing to each other, etc.
As you can see, just use your imagination to create fun activities for daily exposure to high frequency words.
Listed below is the beginning list of Washington Township Schools (WTS) sight words. Once your child has mastered these, I can provide you with the next list.
