 Dear Parents,

Hello!  Happy March!  We have a fun-filled month with Read Across America and St. Patrick’s Day activities!

In the past month we have been working on our research of civic leaders and our  report for expository writing. Students will share their reports and bottle projects with the class. Thank you for your help with the bottle project! Students will also create a Google slide about their leader which will be a part of a class slide show.

This month in Science, we have some more experiments and activities with pebbles, soil and sand! Once we finish this science unit, we will move onto “insects and plants.”  In Math we are studying geometry, fractions and telling time. Needless to say, we are keeping busy!

At this point in the year, my expectations for effort on class work and homework are a little higher.  I am encouraging students to add details to their writing. For example, on reading responses, students should look back into the book for evidence that supports their answers and write it in their own words while using complete sentences. Students should be writing detailed sentences rather than general or simplistic phrases.  In class, I often tell my students to show their best effort and “go the extra mile.”

Thank you for your support with homework and helping your child prepare for school each day.  Homework folders need to go back and forth to school every day. One hint for the math homework is to have your child review the “explain” pages.  I am working hard to teach the students the importance of following directions and showing neat and careful work.  At this time, students should be able to recognize some of the spelling mistakes they are making on everyday words.  Please reiterate with your child the importance of working slowly and carefully and checking their work when finished.  In class, we say to use COPS!  Students are told to use resources to help with spelling. Please encourage your child to use the website for Raz-kids! Students should also practice addition and subtraction facts daily.

The first half of our school year has been a great success. I am especially proud of them when they work together as a class to fill our puff jar! As a class, we will continue to work on listening skills, working independently, cooperation and showing respect. Everyday at BAC, all students should strive to be respectful, responsible, persistent, safe, and kind. Thank you for encouraging your child to always do their best in school!

      Sincerely, Mrs. Mackenzie
