Scenario: You have just received your diploma and are about to enter the real world. You will choose a career and find what the starting salary is (for people without experience). You will need to include a printout of the salary as prove. Your task is to create a realistic budget. An even bigger challenge is to live within that budget.
Task: A budget starts with knowing how much money you bring in each month. This is called your income. Expenses are the opposite of income. Money is spent on the things you need or want. Below are some basic categories of expenses. Your expenses need to be less than your monthly income. If not, you will need to change your spending habits. Also, if your savings is not at least 10% of your income, you will need to adjust your spending habits.
Part One-Occupation
You will choose a career and find what the salary is for people without experience. You will need to include a printout of the salary as prove.
Part Two- Housing
Find a place to live. You will choose a place in the United States where there are job opportunities in your career. Look for a place to rent or buy. Describe the size and amenities of your place and provide pictures. Stay within your means!
Part Three-Transportation
Choose a new or used car that you would consider owning. Anyone that owns a car must add an additional $250 per month for gas, insurance, and maintenance. Find out car prices. Calculate your car payment. After you research car buying, if you decide not to buy a car, you may pay $100 per month for use of public transportation.
Part Four Create a worksheet in Excel with the information you have collected. Make adjustments to your spending if necessary in order to meet project goals. See sample sheet next page.
Part Five -Make a circle graph. Use the data from your Excel worksheet to create a circle graph. Place the circle graph next to the data and print entire spread sheet with graph.
Part Six –Create a power point presentation. In your power point presentation include:
- Introduction Slide (1 slide)
- A description of your career. (1-2 slides)
- What are the daily responsibilities? (1 slide)
- How much schooling do you need for this career? What schools offer this career? (1 slide)
- Why did you choose this career? (1)
- The house or apartment you plan to live in (it has to be within your means) (1 slide)
- The car you plan to drive (it has to be within your means) (1 slide)
- You may include any additional items in your budget (1-2 slides)
- Excel worksheet budget (1 slide)
- Circle graph showing percentages. (1 slide)
- Prove of salary page (1 slide)
- Bibliography page. Include all sources and websites used for this project (1 slide)
Items to Turn In: A printed copy of your power point presentation with all sections of the project included.
