"How can I help my student succeed?"

  • Help build reading confidence

When they do not succeed, encourage them to keep trying and assist, rather than berating.

  • Give kids lots of opportunities to read out loud to you

Menus, signs, billboards, magazines, books, etc. - the more exposure to words and reading, the better

  • Promote writing

Encourage journaling, writing letters to friends or family, writing to-do lists or wish lists, etc.

  • Ask questions

Ask about what they learned in school, ask questions about what they have read, ask them about what is difficult or how you can help assist them with school, etc.

"What are some online resources I can use at home?"

  • Clever - students should know their log in with Google, if not, let me know!

On Clever, there are lots of great resources for ELA, most importantly, Lexia (see below).

  • Lexia - located on Clever (see above)

This is our main ELA intervention site that students are required to get a certain number of minutes per week. We will do our best to attain these minutes each week at school, but the more minutes - the BETTER! This is direct, explicit reading intervention.

Students can practice writing and typing skills. These skills are universal and will help them prepare as they get older and have to complete more and more assignments digitally.
