8th Grade Math class

Dear parents and students,

The expectations for 8th grade Math are as follows:

Daily supplies:  Students must use pencil for ALL math classwork and homework.  Please keep them supplied with either mechanical or regular pencils and erasers (erasable pen is not allowed). I will supply each student with a folder and a spiral notebook, which will often be kept in the classroom. However, GRADED homework may also be assigned in this notebook.

Nightly homework:  Counts as 10% of the grade and is graded on completion.  If students have trouble with part of an assignment, they should circle it and show what they tried. No penalty is given for attempted homework.  Textbook homework assignments include odd numbered answers in the back.  Therefore, they must show all work and then check answers.

I-Ready Online Math Practice:  This is a review of concepts already covered and helps to keep students practicing current skills.  It will usually be assigned on a weekly basis. We like to try and keep it routine for students. Teachers will offer some computer time in school. However, students may need more time using a computer at home to complete this assignment.  Each I-Ready assignment counts as a quiz grade. We understand that many students are very busy.  This is an assignment that they can complete during the week when it is convenient for them.  If they have busy weeks, they may take the weekend to complete it.

D.S. 50 - written:  This assignment allows students to explain the concepts and procedures they used to complete a specified math problem.  It will count as a quiz grade. Although D. S. originally stood for Daily Summary, I will only periodically assign these written explanations. Students will be expected to write a minimum of 50 words and use proper math vocabulary for each explanation.  Additional math vocabulary words will receive extra credit. They will be given several practice examples prior to a graded D.S. 50. These will count as a quiz grades.

Quizzes:  Additional chapter quizzes will be assigned.

Tests:  Tests are always announced and may have Study Guides assigned.  Tests are cumulative of a chapter and are worth twice as much as quizzes.

Marking Period Packets: I will assign a marking period packet to be worked on IN CLASS ONLY - given after completion of quizzes or tests, so that students have work to accomplish while others are still testing. These packets allow students to practice topics that we've previously covered or attempt new concepts for the next chapter. I may also assign these on half days and at those times, students may work together to complete.

Marking Period Assessment (MPA):  These are scheduled at the end of each marking period and are a cumulative test of everything covered that marking period.  They are administered in class.  They have the same value as other tests.

Thank you,

Marisa Rodgers
