Welcome to Mrs. Bouterse's 5th Grade Class!

NEW SCHOOL YEAR, SAME OLD TEACHER!

I'm so very excited to move with my students up to fifth grade this year.  Although many of you may think of "science" when you think back on fourth grade, I will now be teaching Social Studies and Reading. This is a very exciting transition for me, as my undergraduate degree is actually in History.  I  cannot wait to share my love of reading and social studies with my kids this year, and hopefully instill in them the passion I have for these subjects.

Here are some updates about what students will be learning

during the week of November 13th:

Reading:  We will continue our interactive read aloud Wonder.  We will also wrap up our first Unit in Reader's Workshop.  Students will work on developing good reading habits during this unit.  This week students will focus on growing in conversations with others about their books.

Social Studies:  We will begin to investigate the Age of Exploration. Students will focus on exploring the following question:

How did interaction between European, African, and Native American cultures shape early American history?

Other Important Reminders:

  • On most Monday through Thursday evenings, your child will typically be assigned a math home link, 25 minutes of reading, and sometimes a spelling or vocabulary assignment.  More information will be sent home about these when they are assigned in the next couple weeks.  Science, writing, and social studies assignments will occur periodically.  Your child’s typical nightly practice should take no more than 40 minutes to complete.  If it is taking longer than this, please let me know as soon as possible.

  • Please review your child’s assignment notebook each evening.  Students will check out with me at the end of the day just as they did in fourth grade.  I will sign student notebooks to ensure that they are filled out correctly.  However, I will not check for parent signatures this year. This is a huge shift in responsibility from the teacher to the student as students move into intermediate grades.  Please help students develop good study habits by checking their assignment notebooks when they get home.

  • Don't forget to pack a snack each day! Lunch this year is at 11:05 a.m. - nearly an hour earlier than last year.  So students will have an opportunity to eat snack in the afternoons.

  • Please check this website weekly, as it will serve as our classroom newsletter and will inform you of important notes/dates and our plans for the upcoming week.

  • Click on the "Encore" section of my website to check our daily encore schedule.
