Mr. Mosetti's English Class
In order to prepare you for the upcoming school year in my classroom, I would like to illustrate my philosophy that English is life. Learning is active and productive, not passive and receptive. A classroom based in that belief may encompass literature from all walks of life and provide a base for its practical application within our students’ lives. Our class will discover and perfect reading comprehension, drawing conclusions, making inferences, and writing skills that will be transferable in whatever career path students choose, as well as build memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
What to Expect:
Students will experience multiple forms of representation as we dive into our realm of study in English class. Utilizing current events, popular culture, music, film, poetry, and a diverse set of literature our class will truly be a vessel of lifelong learning. Our journey begins with an informational unit based informational texts and will continue through units focused on short stories, the art of argumentation, poetry/drama, and the novel. Exposure to such varied authors and forms of expression will springboard each student’s understanding of their own learning styles and develop creativity and establish creditability in his/her own writing. My classroom goal is to establish an efficient and effective learning community to appropriately address relevant 21st century standards and prepare for PARCC within our study over the course of the year. Lessons will hinge upon essential questions and enduring understandings. All writing assignments will be graded using a holistic scoring rubric consistent with the EHT Schools English department and state testing standards. This year's main focus will be finding and citing relevant EVIDENCE to support our CLAIMS.
Classroom set of textbooks will be provided. Students are expected to care for overall maintenance of their assigned textbook and make sure to bring it to class each day unless instructed otherwise.
Literature: Holt, Rinehart, Winston Elements of Literature First Course
Grammar: Holt, Rinehart, Winston Elements of Language First Course
Every student is responsible for the textbooks issued to him or her. A record of all distributed textbooks will be maintained. In the event a book is lost or damaged, charges will be assessed to the student. The principal or his designee will determine the cost based on the condition and the price of the book. Replacement books, grades, report cards, and student records will be withheld until payment for lost or damaged textbooks, library books, instructional materials, and other debts are paid.
In addition to the rules and regulations outlined in the student handbook and student code of conduct, I wish to establish with the class a set of basic rules and guidelines specifically for our English class to ensure our success. The students and I will spend part of one class period creating our classroom rules based on respect and a mutual goal to establish an effective learning community, after which they will be sent home for parent/guardian inspection.
At this point in your child’s education you are aware of your child’s past performance in school. If your child has exhibited weaknesses that need to be worked on or strengths you wish to see cultivated further in his/her school years, please feel free to contact me throughout the year to check on your child’s performance. All students will receive an interim and a report card throughout the year.
Parents/Guardians, I thank you for your interest in your student’s education and I look forward to working with you throughout the course of the school year.
