Students will begin a Unit 3: The Challenge to Make A Difference which will focus on the Holocaust and raising awareness about similar situations across the globe. 

 

Monday: Students will take notes over active and passive voice as well as review parallel structure, conflict, and analogies.

Monday: Grammar and conventions with a focus on irregular  past-tense verbs and using commas with introductory words correctly. Students will also participate in station rotations.

Thursday: Students will examine the role of a school counselor and answer questions. They will also participate in independent reading and the Read 180 software.

8th Grade Reading:

Students are currently in Unit 8 of the Read 180 Program which discusses Turning Points in people's lives and how they dealt with difficult situations. They will be working on vocabulary, comparing and contrasting,  finding text evidence to support answers, using context clues to identify new vocabulary, how to properly use quotation marks, adverbs, and writing a personal narrative. 

 

Monday: Reading 2 Part 2- Students will continue to read about an individual with disabilties who became a successful poet. They will be working on comparing and contrasting events from the story. They will also be rotating through station rotations (computer, independent reading, and small group). 

Tuesday: Reading Inventory Testing

Wednesday: Finish Reading 2 Part 2 -Students will finish station rotations from Monday. 

Thursday: Reading 3 Part 1: Students will read about 2 sisters and the troubles they have had to deal with in their lives. They will also rotate through station rotations again (small group, computer, and independent reading). 

Friday: Finish Reading 3 Part 1 and station rotations. 

 

Monday (12/18): Reading 3 Part 2- Students will continue to read about the two sisters and their hardships. They will use a line graph to answer questions from the article and compare and contrast items from the text.

Students are currently in Unit 5 of the Read 180 and System 44 program. They are reading about peer pressure and how it has affected people. There are 3 readings that will look at different aspects of peer pressure. This units concepts will be focusing on identifying problems and their solutions, summarizing, finding the main idea, homophones, compound words, writing an argument essay, using irregular verbs, and using commas. 

 

Monday: Reading 2 Part 2- students will continue to read about the secrets to self-esteem. They will also complete station rotations (computer, independent reading, and small group).

Wednesday: Students will finish Reading 2 Part 2.

8th Grade ELA

 

For the next couple of weeks, your child will be reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. We will be completing vocabulary pages, reading comprehension questions, and interactive activities as we work our way through the book. There will be tests and quizzes throughout the novel study, so please make sure you are checking with your child nightly to discuss homework and any assignments. If you would like to buy your child a copy of novel to use at home (does not have to be new...there are TONS of them at the used bookstores), please feel free to do so. However, students will not be allowed to take the books home unless it is an absolute necessity. Please remember that borrowed books will need to be replaced if lost. I am really looking forward to reading this novel with your child and I am excited about all the learning possiblities the novel holds! Below is the tentative schedule up until Thanksgiving Break. 

 

11/6/2017

Monday: Introduction to The Giver (Author and Genre); Students will take notes over the material and then complete a pre-reading worksheet. Pre-reading worksheet is homework if not finished in class. 

Tuesday: NO SCHOOL

Wednesday: Students will discuss and take notes over different reading strategies that can be implemented for lifelong learning and reading comprehension. Students will create questions that are considered Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Finished questions are homework if they do not finish them in class. 

Thursday: Students are learning about how to define difficult vocabulary using context clues. They will take notes over this, complete a practice sheet implementing the strategy(ies) and then work on vocabulary for Chapter 1. The Chapter 1 Vocabulary sheet is homework if not finished in class. 

Friday: Students will reading Chapter 1 of The Giver. They will begin working on Chapter 1 questions. If they do not finish the questions for chapter 1 (except writing) they will need to complete them for homework.

Monday: Students will review the Chapter 1 questions. They will also write a response to a writing prompt over chapter 1. Students will then begin Chapters 2-3 vocabulary sheet. Chapters 2-3 vocabulary sheet will be homework if not finished in class. *Students will be given the opportunity to attend the Book Fair today. *

Tuesday: Students will Read Chapters 2-3 today and begin answering Chapters 2-3 questions. 

Wednesday: Students will complete an interactive activity about the Ceremony of Feelings. They will also finish their Chapters 2-3 questions and begin working on Chapters 4-5 vocabulary. The Chapters 4-5 vocabulary sheet will be homework if not finished in class. 

Thursday: Today we will read Chapters 4-5 and answer the questions associated with that chapters. All vocabulary and comprehension worksheets will be taken up at the end of class for a grade. 

Friday: Students will dig deeper into the novel by completing the House of the Old interactive activity. They will examine treatement of the elderly around the world and then compare that to how the elderly are treated in The Giver

Tuesday: Students will take notes over Point of View. They will watch a video about point of view and take a quiz over that video to check their understanding. They will start working on their point of view project which is due 9/12 (next TUESDAY) 

Wednesday: Students will review for the quiz tomorrow over the Odyssey, "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh", "Ithaka", plot diagram, and point of view. They will then read an excerpt from A Wrinkle in Time. They will answer questions based off of the reading. 

Thursday: Quiz over Odyssey, "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh", "Ithaka", plot diagram, and point of view. Students will receive their new vocabulary lists for next week. They will read the graphic novel version of A Wrinkle in Time and discuss the differences in the 2 versions fo the story. 

Friday: Prepositional Phrases notes and activities. Students will begin working on their originial hero narrative stories.

Tuesday: Students will review imagery, mood, and tone. They will then read the poem "Ithaka" by C.P. Cavafy and complete an imagery activity over the poem. After that activity, they will complete comprehension questions over the poem. Finished vocabulary due TOMORROW! 

Wednesday: Students will begin reading "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" by Ray Bradbury. They will complete questions over craft and structure as well as key ideas and details. Point of view and setting will be reviewed. There will be a vocabulary quiz TOMORROW! 

Thursday: Students will have their vocabulary quiz over Unit 2 today. They will receive a list for Unit 3. We will finish yesterday's activities in class after the vocabulary quiz.

Friday: Students will complete the graphic organizer over "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" and begin drafting their hero narratives.

Monday: Students will continue working on Unit 1. They will analyze quotes as a warm-up and discuss the Hero's Journey Archetype. They will also apply a movie or character's archetype to a plot diagram. 

Tuesday: Using the film Big Hero 6, students will examine the Hero's journey archetype and complete a graphic organizer. 

Wednesday: Students will continue to work through the Hero's Journey Archetype using Big Hero 6. 

Thursday: Students will take their Unit 1 Vocabulary Quiz (separate from the SpringBoard vocabulary). They will then work on their Unit 2 words/vocabulary sheet. 

Friday: Students will be given independent reading time and can start sketching out their Embedded Assessment 1. 

 

8th Grade Reading

Monday: Students will continue to learn about invasive species. They will finish the draft of their invasive species wanted posters and begintheir final copies. 

Tuesday: Invasive species wanted posters will be due at the end of class today. Students will be allowed to put final touches on their posters during class. 

Wednesday: Students will begin Unit 7 in Read 180 which is about invasive species. They will complete introductory vocabulary. 

Thursday: Students will continue in Unit 7. They will read Reading 1 which is about the Snakehead fish. They will Complete a cause and effect organizer. They will have their first station rotation. 

Friday: Same as Thursday with the other 2 station rotations.

Monday: Students will continue to learn about child labor. They will finish watching a documentary about child labor in the chocolate industry. They will also read an article about child labor in the gold mining industry and answer questions about that article. 

Tuesday: Students will read a play about attempts to end child labor and answer questions/discuss the play. 

Wednesday: Students will complete a Webquest about child labor throughout the world. 

Thursday: Students will being Read 180/System 44. They will discover new vocabulary words and complete an activity with them. 

Friday: Students will begin Unit 4 which is about Stolen Childhoods. They will read an article about child labor in Indonesia. They will complete their first station rotation.

8th Grade ELA: 

 

Monday: We will begin Unit 1: The Challenge of Herosim. Students will perform a "get to know you" activity with their SpringBoard books. Additionally, they will be introduced to the unit's academic vocabulary. 

Tuesday: Students will examine quotes about heroism. They will work together in order to discover what types of challenge each quote it. They will reflect on their answers as a group and individually. 

Wednesday: Students will take the Scholastic Reading Inventory. After this, they will create a word wall for Unit 1. 

Thursday: Students will examine elements of plot and an archetype. Students will also learn about the 3 parts (stages) of a hero's journey.  The test of their first set of words will be NEXT THURSDAY, 8/17. Please make sure they are studying the words each night and completing their vocabulary activities.  

Friday: Students will look at clips of Big Hero 6 in order to demonstrate the 3 parts of a hero's journey. They will list examples from the movie in order to complete a chart in the SpringBoard book. Students will receive their first vocabulary list of the year.

 

8th Grade Reading: 

 

Monday: Students will be getting further aquainted with fellow peers. Additionally, they will be introduced to the Read 180 software and dashboard. They will also practice the Read Aloud activity in Read 180. 

Tuesday: Students will take a Reader's Interest Survey and examine how the Reading Zone works in the Read 180 Software. 

Wednesday: Students will be introduce to Whole-Group and Small-Group expectations. They will also examine how the Word Zone works in the Read 180 software. 

Thursday: Students will complete a book pass activity and get aquainted with the Spelling Zone of the Read 180 software. 

Friday: Students will review the first weeks' activities and examine the Success Zone of the Read 180 software.

My name is Jessica Bowden and this is my second year teaching at Palmer, but I have been teaching for 7 years total. I am a product of the Cobb County School system and graduated from Kennesaw State University. I teach English Language Arts and Reading at Palmer. I am looking forward to teaching and watching your child grow this year.
