About the Teacher
Amanda L. Guidry grew up in Opelousas and graduated with honors from Northwest High School. She then attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where she majored in mass communication/journalism and minored in art. While there, she worked her way up from staff writer to news editor and managing editor of The Vermilion, the student-written newspaper, and worked as an intern for Gannet Publishing. After earning her bachelor's degree, she jumped right back into school and earned a master of science in communication/journalism with a minor in history. While focusing on her master's degree, she worked as editor in chief of the school newspaper and as a teaching assistant, teaching various communication and public speaking courses at the university, and was editor of Verité, the local Society of Professional Journalists chapter's magazine.
After completing her degree, Guidry joined the "real world" work forces and became managing editor of Bonnes Nouvelles, a local newsmagazine that published positive news stories about the people, music, places, art, and food of Acadiana. While working at BN, Guidry also taught as an adjunct professor at Louisiana State University at Eunice, teaching several communication courses. It was while teaching at LSUE that she realized she wanted to switch gears and teach full time.
Guidry enrolled in an alternative certification program for education and garnered certification in Secondary English and Journalism and is AP Board certified for English & Literature. She taught English, creative writing, and public speaking in St. Landry Parish for six years, English and yearbook in St. Martin Parish for one, and this is her fifth year in Lafayette Parish.
