Syllabus for English I
Course Description: Regular Courses English I
Course Description: English I will focus on developing a familiarity with the language of reading, writing, literature, speaking, and listening. Students will practice comprehension strategies by looking at the content of texts they read and then applying critical thinking skills to increasingly complex text. Vocabulary knowledge is extended beyond the basics into content-specific and technical works. Students in the ninth grade are introduced to the study of literature of specific genres and universal themes. In writing, the focus is on writing coherently in all modes and mastering the conventions. Students should demonstrate skill in performing well-organized research practices to produce documented research papers and projects.
Objectives:
Course Goals: The goals as developed by the members of the department include the following: Students will be expected to
1. Read, comprehend, and respond to a range of materials, using a variety of strategies for different purposes.
2. Write competently for a variety of purposes and audiences.
3. Communicate using Standard English grammar, usage, sentence structure, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and handwriting.
4. Demonstrate competence in speaking and listening as tools for learning and communicating.
5. Locate, select, and synthesize information from a variety of texts, media, references, and technological sources to acquire and communicate knowledge.
6. Read, analyze, and respond to literature as a record of life experiences.
7. Apply reasoning and problem-solving skills to reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and visually representing.
Classroom Rules and Discipline Policy:
- Arrive on time.
- Be seated and begin working by the ringing of the tardy bell.
- Be respectful to everyone.
- Follow the Classroom procedures and the Student Handbook Policy.
- Cell phone and electronic device usage are only allowed before/after school and during lunch.
Supplies Needed: One laptop computer, one charger (chechecked out from the school), one binder, looseleaf paper, pens, pencils, and highlighters.
Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. More than five unexcused absences in semester courses, or ten in year courses will result in failure or credit recovery.
Absentee Policy: Upon return from an absence, the students must make up any missed assignments or tests within two days (or otherwise indicated), and turn it in to the teacher in order to receive a grade. Any missed work which is not made up will result in a 0X, which can bring down a grade average to an F very quickly, especially for summative assignment.
Homework Policy: any assigned homework will count as a formative grade. Late work will be accepted, but may reduce credit.
Extra Help: I am always available to give extra help during class or to pair a student up with a helpful classmate. There is after-school tutoring with school bus service available. See the school website for morre information.
Grading Policy: Each marking period grade will be the average of at least 5 formative grades which have a weight of 30 %, and 4 summative grades which have a weight of 70%. There will also be administered Diagnostic testing, and Statewide Standardized testing such as LEAP. The LEAP will count as the Final Exam grade, worth 20% of the course grade.
Grading Scale The grading policy was changed last year to the following:
A 90-100; B 80-89; C 70- 79; D 60-69 F 0-59.
