Dear Parents,
By now, you must be looking at the new Math a little perplexed. Don't blame you. This is new for our students and teachers too. But through perseverance and alot of practice, we can do it. If that doesn't work, just come to Back to School Night. Your child's teachers will model the strategies so you too can look at it like an expert. We have included a model of the correct way to solve one of these problems.
Problem 46 + 7=
R.W.D.= Read it
Draw It- represent the numbers as tens and ones. 4 tens 6 ones + 7 ones
We draw it as: 4 lines and 6 circles.
Then, we draw 7 circles side by side to the 6 ones of 46.
Now, we circle 4 tens rods, 6 ones and 4 from the 7 in one big circle. Together that is 50
Now, we have 3 left over.
Add 50 + 3= 53
EX: 46 + 7 =
46 is 4 away from the next ten (50).
46 + 4 + 3 We broke down the 7 into two numbers that when added together equal 7. Since, 6 is 4 away from the next
ten, then we will use 4 as one addend. Thus, the other addend is 3
Again 46 + 7=
46 + 4 + 3=
Now add 46 + 4=50
So, we add 50 + 3= 53
Alot of work. Yes! But on the PARC Test that is how they want kids to solve problems.
