Grading Policy

Performance

70% - Summative

All students must attend all performances. All curricular ensembles are performance based. Consequently, all students are required to perform the concert literature in a concert setting.  If a student has an unexcused absence for a performance, s/he must notify the teacher and an alternative writing assignment will be given consisting of a minimum of:  3 pages - 7th and 8th grade, 4 pages - 9th and 10th grade or 5 pages - 11th or 12th grade to be completed prior to the end of the marking period. This must be completed no later than two weeks following the concert. S/he will not receive full credit and their grade will drop at least one letter grade, which is determined by their current grade in band.  If a student is sick with a doctor’s note, there is a death in the family or some other extenuating circumstance; the student’s grade will not be dropped as long as they complete the written assignment in the two week time frame.

Participation/Achievement/Posture/Behavior

10% - Formative

To receive full credit, the student must come to class prepared with his/her music, instrument, pencil and all supplies necessary. The student must also perform all musical tasks to the best of his/her ability and display consistent improvement in class. Improvement will be evident if the student practices on a regular basis, shows interest in developing a professional attitude toward preparing and performing music and being prompt to class and performances. Students will be evaluated on posture on a daily basis. Students should sit at the edge of the chair with the back away from the back of the chair while sitting up straight with both feet on the floor. Students will act appropriately in class. Talking, horseplay chewing gum, eating and having cell phones and other electronic devices out will not be tolerated.

Assignments

10% - Formative

Students will receive various assignments in class daily as performance or writing assignments, throughout the marking period that are expected to be satisfactorily completed in a timely manner to excel in this category. These assignments to be completed during time at home doing virtual or in school instruction and could include, but not be limited to, in class written work, theory assignments, sectional performance work, etc. Each student is expected to do their best on these assignments as they are the “tools” to improving their sound, as well as the band’s overall sound.

Assessments

10% - Formative

Students will engage in various types of testing throughout the marking period to benchmark their progress towards learning concert repertoire and/or skills being taught that marking period.
