CHILD STUDY PROGRAM

The Pohatcong School District maintains a Child Study Team consisting of a psychologist, learning disabilities teacher-consultant, social worker, and speech/language specialist as required by state law (N.J.A.C. 6A:14).  The purpose of the Child Study Team is to identify children with disabilities who need special education and related services; to develop Individualized Education Plans for these children; to work with teachers and parents to help the student’s progress in the general curriculum; and to provide related services for students with disabilities.  Child Study Team members may also work with general education (non-disabled) students as directed by the Superintendent (see “Intervention & Referral Services” below).

Any parent, teacher, or other school employee may refer a child (age 3-21) to the Child Study Team to determine whether an evaluation for special education services is warranted.  Requests should be made in writing to the Superintendent.  Additional information about the services provided by the Child Study Team, parent/student rights, and copies of state laws relevant to students with disabilities can be obtained by contacting the Child Study Team Coordinator (859-8155, ext. 5).

INTERVENTION & REFERRAL SERVICES

The Intervention & Referral Services (I&RS) is comprised of teachers, administrators, and Child Study Team members who meet to design, implement, and monitor strategies for supporting general education (non-classified) students who are experiencing difficulties in their classes.  Parents, teachers, and other school personnel may refer students to the I&RS by completing a “Request for Student Support”.
