Character Counts In Room 53

What is a Class Economy?

This year, your child will participate in a classroom economy.  Students will be actively involved in a year-long study of economics where they earn credits and debits while also maintaining a class bank and school reward system.  This system allows students to learn and develop life skills, as well as use math skills on a daily basis.  The students' potential to earn credits and debits also helps me facilitate classroom management.  Positive and negative points categories in Class Dojo translate to financial credits and debits.

There are several components to our class economy that your child will be eager to tell you about, but the main tools used in this system are the credit and debit logs, a biweekly payroll, classroom bank, and our classroom incentive program.  Below is a brief description of each.

Credit and Debit Logs:

Throughout the week, students can earn credits for any number of things.  For example, students who have a weekly classroom job earn credits, according to our payroll, as "pay" for performing their job.  The can also earn credits by following rules, showing good character, and putting extra effort into schoolwork.  Debits are given to students each time they change their behavior card for breaking classroom rules or procedures, and for breaking school rules.  At the end of each pay period, students add their credits and subtract their debits to calculate their total paycheck.

Payroll:

At the beginning of the year students decide on a payroll for our classroom jobs.  At the end of each week, students will get paid for performing their job based on this payroll.  At the end of the pay period students will report their credit/debit totals to me, as we review their Dojo bi-weekly report.  Students then recieve their paycheck which can be cashed at our classroom bank.

Class Dojo Reward Store

Our Class Dojo Reward Store and Classroom Incentives will be open on payday for students to spend their Dojo dollars on any item/incentive(s) they choose.  Students may also choose to save their money so that they can buy more expensive items or rewards.

** If you are interested in contributing to our inventory, please feel free to send any small toy items in with your child.  I find most of our school store items at The Dollar Store, Five Below, Smilemakers.com, and Oriental Trading Company.  Thank you!

What is Class Dojo?

Class Dojo is both a website & App that helps teachers positively encourage students and easily communicate with parents about their child's sucesses and behavior in the classroom. It also allows both the teacher and students to share "our class story" by posting pictures and video updates to all parents. We can share what is happening in our classroom throughout the year, including birthdays, projects, STEM challenges, parties, etc.  In addition, both teacher and parents can send private messages and know they've been seen with read receipts. This app will allow us to communicate and share your child's school experience in an amazing school & home connection.
