I am very excited to have your child in my reading class this 2019 - 2020 school year. My main goal is to continue teaching your children how to understand and enjoy what they are reading. I will be using the Close Reading strategy in my reading class. This is a reading strategy that will help your child have a better and clearer understanding of what they are reading.

This year your child will be taught reading using chapter books. These chapter books will stay in the classroom, but your child will have reading homework on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Each week, I will send home a reading passage. This reading passage will be used for Monday and Tuesday night’s homework. Each night they will have different questions regarding different passages. The reason for this homework assignment is so that your child can grasp a deeper understanding of what they are reading. Each Thursday, your child will tak a reading quiz which will be on a different Cold-Read passage like the ones they have had for homework. If your child does not do his/her homework then he/she will not have the advantage of all the work that was done throughout the week with the reading passages.

On Friday, the students will have a reading test on a different reading passage. The Friday reading passage will be different from the homework passages, but the same reading strategy will be used to answer questions.

Test and quiz papers will stay at school. If you would like to see their test paper, please let me know. I will send them home, but please return them to me signed. I like to keep my test papers at school so I can track the progress of your child’s reading throughout the year. Again, I am so happy to have your child in my class this year. If you have any questions or would like to discuss your child with me, please call the office to set up a conference 985-229-6377 or e-mail me at [email protected].
