March's Happenings
Language Arts:
We will continue our journey into reading with our series My View Literacy. We will focus on phonics and grammar skills throughout the year. We will continue to practice phonics using the FUNdations program. This program focuses on phonics (proper letter sounds), letter formation, spelling, and writing sentences. We will also merge Magetic Reading into our Language Arts program. We will also continue to use Raz-Kids (Reading Robot) and the DRA3 to help drive independent reading instruction. We will continue to use i-Ready to practice language arts skills. Our class will work in whole group and small groups, teams and pairs.

Math:
The focus this year will be on knowing our Addition and Subtraction facts to 10 (and hopefully 20) by heart. Students will learn several stragegies to help add and subtract. We will also use i-Ready to practice math skills. We will also focus on numbers to 120, including place value. During Morning Meeting we learn how to tell time, count money and measure objects using inches. Will will continue to use the online component ST Math to our students this year. We will play math games and work with our Math Teams. Of course we will use several different manipulatives to help us with our math skills. Each stuend will have their own manipulative bag in their backpack to use at home. Please keep this in your child's backpack.
Science:
We will learn about "engineering" (NGSS standards) and how it helps us learn and contribute to our world. Our students will continue unsing the MysteryScience website this year for most of our science lessons. When available we will conduct hands-on experiments throughout the school year within our classroom and homes. We will continue to investigate the seasonal changes that occur throughout the year and will investigate "seasonal" objects. Students will use their five senses as an observation tool. Our current focus is "Light and Sound Waves and Vibration". We will continue to review Sound and Light. We will also use the district adopted Dimensions Science Program.
Social Studies:
Our class will discuss respect and friendship, including working as a team (class). We will also focus on Anti bullying lessons. Our goal is to end bullying in our schools. Even though I have always incorportated Mindfullness and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) skills into my lessons, this year we will continue to learn these coping skills. Each week we are learning about different American Symbols and why they are important to our country. Students will be given jobs during our Morning Meeting and will learn how cooperation and communication are essential qualities in order to be good classroom citizens.

* Your child should bring a bottle of water to school each day to leave on his/her desk. Hydration is very important to learning. Having a bottle of water allows the students to get a drink without leaving the learning environment. Please label your child's water bottle so we do not mix them up.
If your child is going to wear a sweater in school, please remember that the sweater must be navy blue or khaki. I recommend that children bring a sweater in case it is chilly in the classroom or building.
