Dear Third Grader,
Welcome to a new school year! I hope you are as excited for this year as I am. We will both be embarking on a new adventure together. This will be my first year in Third Grade too and by the way, let me introduce myself, my name is Mrs. Somers! I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and new ones! Let me tell you a bit about my time at Liberty Corner. When I first started 21 years ago, I taught Second Grade for six years and then moved to Kindergarten where I have been. So, now I am moving back up as I start my 22nd year here. I really am looking forward to teaching Third Grade.
I hope you have been enjoying your summer. My summer has been a great one. I went on a cruise to Bermuda, rode the roller coasters at Hershey Park and spent lots of time in Ocean City with my family. When we are not away from home, I love spending time in my garden and biking on the beautiful Columbia Trail which is right in our town. And yes, as some as you may also know, I love cats!
Now, let me tell you about Third Grade. In Third Grade, we will be learning about exciting topics. In Language Arts, we will embark on an adventure with our reading and writing workshop programs! We will be exploring all types of genres while practicing our reading and writing skills. You will learn how to keep a writer’s notebook while enjoying so many wonderful books of your choice! We will also be involved with an author study of Roald Dahl. Our science units are captivating and include forces and interactions, life cycles and traits as well as weather and climate. This year in Math, we will learn about multiplication, geometry, measurement and more using our math program, GO MATH! Finally, in Social Studies we will learn about communities, including Bernards Township.
On the first day of school, we will have our schedule of what days we have PE, so you’ll know when to wear or bring your gym shoes. When you get to the classroom, I will have a homework folder for you plus other folders for our other subjects. In Third Grade, we start to learn about how important it is to be organized. If you ordered a supply kit it will be waiting for you here in the classroom at open house. If you did not, below is a list of school supplies you will need. And don’t forget to pack a healthy snack. Please remember to use reusable containers and to bring a water bottle that can be refilled. It is important to reuse, reduce and recycle to keep our planet healthy.
I hope you will be able to stop by for our Open House on Wednesday, September 4th anytime from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. so I can meet you and say, “Hello!” You will find me in Room 208 on Friendship Road. Our first full day of school is on Thursday, September 5th! Please tell your parents that this is a FULL day of school!
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
See you soon,
