Also on thursday, we just received word that Lady Of the Lady will bring their new program to my class, STOP THE BLEEDING. I am excited for this because I have never seen this.
(Mar. 16) TO ALL MY STUDENTS AND PARENTS....I AM PUTTING THIS MESSAGE TOGETHER AS WE START THIS PERIOD OF NO SCHOOL DUE TO THE VIRUS. MY SUPERVISORS WILL BE MEETING TOMORROW (17TH) FOR A MEETING TO DETERMINE BEST WAY OF GETTING CLASSROOM INFO OUT TO YOU. THIS WEBSITE WILL BE THE PLACE TO GET INFORMATION FOR THIS CLASS OR EMAIL ME FOR ANY OTHER QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE. I REALIZE THAT THE BOOKS STAY IN CLASS and I WILL MAKE SURE YOU GET COPIES OF THE CHAPTERS AND OTHER WORK TO YOU. I can tell we will start with Chapter 12 "Obtaining a Medical History and Vital Signs". WHEN THE TEACHERS FIND OUT THE GAME PLAN, YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED. I DO ASK, PLEASE KEEP EACH PACKET TOGETHER SO IT WILL BE EASY ON ME GIVING YOU THE CREDIT YOU DESERVE IN DOING THE WORK.
TILL THEN.....THIS IS THE TIME TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND BE THAT YOUNG PERSON THAT MOM/DAD/GRAND PARENT WANTS YOU TO BE. SHOW THAT YOU CAN BE TRUSTED AND RELIED ON. PLENTY OF THE INFORMATION FROM THE BOOK, VIDEOS, FIELD TRIPS, AND GUEST SPEAKERS JUST MIGHT COME IN HANDY. WE WILL KEEP IN TOUCH.
(MAR. 18TH) GOOD MORNING TO MY GOOD STUDENTS. BY KNOW YOU PROBABLY KNOW WHERE YOU CAN FIND OUR CLASSWORK. TAKE YOUR TIME ON IT, JUST DO A LITTLE EVERYDAY. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EMAIL YOU. I HOPE TO ANSWER BACK IN THE MORNING OR EVENINGS.
(MAR. 19TH) IN THE BEGINNING OF OUR CLASS AND BOOK, THERE WAS A CHAPTER STRESSING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FIRST RESPONDER TAKING CARE OF THEIR HEALTH. WHAT GOOD IS A FRIST RESPONDER WHO IS SICK OR HURT? WHILE WE ARE SPENDING A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME IN DOORS, LETS NOT FORGET TO EAT HEALTHY, GRAB A LITTLE SUNSHINE OUTSIDE, BUT REMEMBER--DON'T STAND CLOSE TO OTHERS. LASTLY AND REALLY IMPORTANT, DO A LITTLE EXERCISING. THESE FEW SUGGESTIONS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO MAINTAIN AND STRENGTHEN OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM. NOW THAT YOU HAVE EXECUTED THESE SUGGESTIONS, GO DO A LITTLE HOMEWORK. HOW ABOUT A GOOD OLE T.O.D............"TOUGH TIMES DON'T LAST LONG BUT TOUGH PEOPLE DO'
(MAR. 20TH) HI, HOPE EVERYONE IS OK AND DOING WHAT YOU SUPPOSE TO BE DOING. SAW SEVERAL PEOPLE IN STORES WEARING GLOVES. IF YOU HAVE A FRIEND OR LOVE ONE WEARING GLOVES, IT WOULD BE A GREAT TIME TO SHOW THEM HOW TO REMOVE THEM. YOU KNOW, IF YOU REMOVE THEM INCORRECTLY, WELL WHAT WAS THE USE OF THE GLOVES. SO YOU SEE, OUR CLASS INFORMATION IS COMING IN HANDY. BY NOW YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN DIGGING INTO CHAPTER 12, THIS CHAPTER IS ABOUT OBTAINING MEDICAL INFORMATION ON THE PATIENT WHO IS SICK OR INJURIED. IF YOU LISTEN TO THE NEWS, THEY ASKING PEOPLE WHO HAVE A FEVER AND A COUGH TO JUST STAY HOME UNLESS THEY HAVE A HISTORY OF SOMETHING THAT IS SEVERE. THIS IS TO AVOID A PERSON GOING TO HOSPITAL TO BE TESTED NEGATIVE AND NOW THEY BEEN AROUND THOSE WHO ARE REALLY SICK. SO WHILE AT HOME, YOU MAY NEED TO GET INFORMATION LIKE DO THEY A FEVER, ETC BEFORE HEADING OFF TO BE TESED.
ABOUT STAYING HOME....LETS USE ONE OF OUR PAST T.O.D.'S 'SOMEONE KNOWS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS SOMEONE WHO KNOWS SOMEONE....." LESSON TO BE LEARNED....ONE PERSON COULD COUGH/SNEEZE ON ANOTHER, AND NOW THAT PERSON IS AROUND YOU. KEEP A GOOD 6 FEET AWAY.
CHAPTER 12 STRESSES THAT GAINING TRUST FROM THE PATIENT AND MAKING THEM REALIZE THAT THE INFO YOU ARE SEEKING IS IMPORTANT. THIS INFO WILL IMPROVE THE CARE YOU WILL/CAN OFFER. IN YOUR QUESIONS, YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE CHIEF COMPLAINT WHICH IS THE MAIN REASON THEY ARE LOOKING FOR ASSISTANCE.
YOUR QUESTIONS WILL BE IN THE FORM OF S.A.M.P.L.E.....S-what signs or symptoms do you see, feel, hear, or what they tell you........A. allergies (they will know if they are, what, but if patient is a little one, speak with a family member....M-are they taking any meds (which could help or even hurt the situation)...P-past medical history (is this something new or reoccuring)...L-last oral intake...E-what were you doing when they got sick or hurt. SAMPLE IS A GREAT WAY TO GET TO THE ROOT OF THE SITUATION. FIRST COUSIN TO S.A.M.P.L.E. IS O.P.Q.R.S.T.....ONLY DIFFERENCE IN THIS YOU WILL FIND OUT THE QUALITY OF THE BAD FEELING, SEVERITY (ON A SCALE OF 1-10, 10 BEING WORST, WHERE THEY ARE AND REALLY IMPORTANTLY.....TIME. WHEN DID IT START. IN THE NEWS YOU ARE HEARING ALOT ABOUT TIME........HOW LONG PEOPLE HAD THE VIRUS AND NOW THEY FEELING BETTER, HOW LONG VIRUS CAN LIVE ON CERTAIN SURFACES, LENGTH OF A PERSONS QUARANTINE.
LATER IN CHAPTER THEY SPEAK OF VITAL SIGNS......ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ONES IS...FEVER. FEVER IS A GREAT INDICATOR THAT SOMETHING IS NOT QUITE RIGHT INSIDE THE BODY.....THE NORMAL CORE BODY TEMPERATURE IS 9799. BABIES AND CHILDRN HAVE A LITTLE HIGHER RANGE.
IT WAS GREAT CHATTING WITH YOU A LITTLE ON CHAPTER 12. IF THERE IS A QUESTION AT THE END OF YOUR PACKET, FEEL FREE TO USE THE BOOK AND LOOK UP THE ANSWER. TAKE CARE AND HAVE A SMART WEEKEND.
(MAR. 23RD)...GOOD MORNING, HOPE YOU HAD A SAFE (6FT) FROM OTHERS AND PRODUCTIVE WEEKEND. T.O.D. FOR TODAY IS "DON'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT YOU DON'T HAVE, BE HAPPY WHAT YOU STILL HAVE"
THIS WEEK WE WILL TAKE A LOOK AT CHAPTER 13 (PRINCIPLES OF PATIENT ASSESSMENT). THIS MIGHT BE THE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL THAT YOU WILL WILL AND HAVE TO MASTER IN THE WORLD OF MEDICENE. WHAT GOOD IS YOUR MEDICAL EDUCATION AND YOUR MEDICAL EQUIPMENT IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT WHATS WRONG? IS IT SOMETHING THAT WILL GO AWAY ON ITS OWN OR DO THEY NEED ADVANCE MEDICAL CARE. GAINING THIS INFORMAION WILL HELP YOU MAKE THAT DECISION. AS ALWAYS, SCENE SAFETY IS YOUR FIRST CONCERN. THERE ARE 2 KINDS OF PATIENTS, TRAUMA (ONE WHO IS HURT) AND MEDICAL (ONE WHO IS SICK). IF YOU WATCHING THE NEWS, THEY SPEAKING ALOT ABOUT MEDICAL PATIENTS. FORMING A GENERAL IMPRESSION (YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF THE PATIENTS OVERALL CONDITION) WHEN YOU FIRST MEET THE PATIENT. REMEMBER ALWAYS LOOK FOR THEIR A.B.C. (Airway, Breathing, Circulation). WHEN IT COMES TO CLASSIFYING THE PATIENTS MENTAL STATUS......USE A.V.P.U. (airway, verbal, pain, unresponsive.) WHEN IT COMES TO VERBAL, IT DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN SPEAKING, I COULD BE A MOAN OR GROAN.
AND FOR USE NON MEDICAL PEOPLE WHO NEED ASISTANCE...............................................USE THE GOOD OLE NUMBER 911, ANSWER THEIR QUESTIONS AND STAY ON PHONE TILL THEY SAY TO HANG UP.
YOU TAKE CARE, DO A LITTLE READING AND ALOT AROUND THE HOUSE FOR MOM/DAD/GRAND PARENT.
(MAR. 27TH) NOTICE FROM LPPS......THERE IS A LPPS ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR PARENTS WHEN IT COMES TO MEALS......REGISTRATION STARTS TODAY AND ENDS MIDNIGHT MARCH 30TH.....IT INCLUDES 10BK/10LUNCH EVERY OTHER WEEK.....ONCE ENROLLMENT PERIOD ENDS--NO STUDENTS CAN BE ADDED......IF INTERESTED IN THIS PROGRAM GO TO LPPS WEBSITE.
(MAR. 30TH-APR. 3RD).......HI, ITS YOUR FAVORITE TEACER, HA.....I HOPE I AM. THIS WEEK WE WOULD AND WILL BE COVERING CHAPTER 14. BUT FIRST, I THOUGHT OF A LITTLE GAME YOU CAN PLAY BY YOURSELF OR ANOTHER IN THE HOUSE. WHEN WATCHING THE NEWS, SEE HOW MANY MEDICAL TERMS YOU CAN SPOT/HEAR . WRITE THEM DOWN AS YOU HEAR THEM. I'LL GIVE YOU A FEW I BEEN HEARING A LOT. (PPE, PATIENTS, DOCTORS, NURSES, HOSPITALS.....) START A COLLECTION AND SEE HOW MANY YOU CAN FIND)
T.O.D. FOR THE WEEK..."HOW DO YOU EAT A 400 LB. ELEPHANT? ONE BIT AT A TIME. TAKE ONE DAY, ONE PROJECT, ONE CHORE, ETC AT A TIME. DO YOUR BEST THEN MOVE ON. I ALOT OF TIMES HAVE TO REMIND MYSELF OF THIS, ESPECIALLY THE LAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. I FIND THIS KEEPS ME ON TRACK AND IT MANY TIMES PREVENTS FRUSTRATIONS. MAKE A CHECK LIST.
CHAPTER14..."CARING FOR CARDIAC EMERGENCIES". WE SHOULD ALL REMEMBER, CARDIAC MEANS "HEART". THIS SHORT CHAPTER (YEA) IS THINGS WE CAN DO FOR OTHERS WHO MIGHT BE SHOWING SIGNS/SYMPTOMS OF HEART ISSUES. YOU KNOW, THAT THE CDC SAYS "HEART DISEASE IS THE NUMBER ONE KILLER AMONG ADULTS IN THE UNITED STATES. IN YOUR READINGS, YOU WILL FIND SOME OF THE MORE COMMON CONDITIONS THAT AFFECT THE HEART IN ITS ABILITY TO PUMP ADEQUATELY AND THE CARE YOU CAN PROVIDE TILL A.L.S ARRIVES (ADVANCE LIFE SUPPORT). CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY AND KEEP THE PATIENT AT REST. IF THEY HAVE MEDICENES THAT THEY FREQUENTLY TAKE, QUICKLY GET IT TO THEM. BUT DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THEIR MOUTH IF THEY ARE UNRESPONSIVE.
SOME SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CARDIAC COMPROMISE (AN ISSUE WITH THE HEART) INCLUDE CHEST PAIN WHICH STARTS IN THE CHEST AREA AND CAN MOVE TO THE SHOULDERS, ARMS, NECK, JAW, SHORTNESS OF BREATH (S.O.B.), PALE COMPLEXTION, MOIST SKIN, NAUSEA, AND WEAKNESS.
ANY OF THE ABOVE SIGNS/SYMPTOMS........DON'T HESITATE...........CALL 911....PREPARE TO ANSWER ALL THEIR QUESTIONS, STAY ON THE PHONE TILL INSTRUCTED TO HANG UP...PREPARE FOR THER ARRIVAL (MOVE VEHICLE OUT DRIVEWAY, MOVE FURNITURE, GET THEIR MEDS READY TO HAND OFF TO EMTS, TIE UP ALL ANIMALS, ANY MAYBE GET THE D.N.R. IS ONE EXIST.
(APR. 6TH-10TH) Good morning, I know you hanging in there. You are ALL CHAMPIONS!!!
This week T.O.D. is ....................'WE CAN'T LOWER OUR STANDARDS IN HARD TIMES, WE MUST RAISE THEM"......Keep your head up, what every you miss doing, people you want to see, places you miss...........in time we will be back to a normal routine.
Boy, if you been watching the news, you should be hearing alot of words, treatments, diseases, etc we spoke about in class.
This week we are in Chapter 17 (Caring for Environmental Emergencies). Is preparing us to recognize and manage life threats based on assessment findings for an acutley njured patient while awaiting additional emergency medical response. This chapter provides an overview of some of the most common environmental emergencies you might find yourself or others in. This chapter has alot to do with the outdoors, hot and cold days. Probably the easiest thing to do with a extreme hot or cold emergency is to get the patient out of the cold or heat. Put them in the opposite temperature of the emergency. If hot, could be getting them in the shade. If its a cold event, get them to a warm temperature and if clothes are wet, get them out of the wet-cold clothes.
A easy thing to remember is 'IF THE FACE IS PALE, RAISE THE TAIL....IF THE FACE IS RED, RAISE THE HEAD"
In your reading, when it come to a heat/cold temperature emergency. be careful when it comes to giving them something to drink. If its a heat related emergency, let patient sip (not chug) on cool water, little at a time. If its a cold temperature emergency, little sips of warm fluid. AND NO ALCOHOL, NO RUBBING COLD BODY PARTS.
WHEN READING THIS CHAPTER, PUT YOURSELF IN THE MOMENT AND ASK YOURSELF "COULD I DO THIS". YES YOU CAN AND WILL............................TAKE CARE AND HOPE TO SEE YOU REAL SOON.

In this chapter, we will learn to remove medical gloves, lots of fun. Last week some of you did well on the first exam and some didn't. This subject is one you have to keep up or the others will be tough on you. Its a building block and you must create a strong foundation. This Friday we will have a State Trooper speak on powerful the seat belt is in a crash. So lets get after it.

If you did not like the grade you received, then READ THOSE NOTES EVERY NIGHT cause its only get harder. This week we will jump in Chapter 4, its all about how the body is designed and terms associated with it. Remember, not everyone goes on the great Lady of the Lake Hospital field trip, YOUR GRADE is huge part of getting on the bus.
SEPT 3RD-6TH...Hope everyone had a great 3 day weekend. This week we will start chapter 6 (Principles of Lifting, Moving, and positoning of patients). We will have a chance to assist others pretending to be hurt. We will learn that we never move a patient unless they/you are in immediate danger or to move them closer to one who is worst off so you can attend to them. This is a short chapter but a good one.
First interims are around the corner, will you be happy or be saying "I could have tried harder". Its all up to you.
SEPT 9TH-13TH...Well that was a fund weekend, hope yours was too. WOW, we had alot of great grades last week. This week we will start Chapter 9 "Principles of Airway Management and Ventilation". We even gonna learn how to do the Heimlich Manueuver. So hang on cause its gonna be another great week in Room 501.

MONDAY is no school and we will have speakers on Wednesday (Acadian Paramedics) and on Friday we will hear about organ donations from L.O.P.A. (Louisiana Organ Procrument Agency. So its gonna be a real interesting week in Room 501, so be here and lets get ready to assist others in need.

SEPT. 30TH-OCT. 4TH..Last week was awesome. We learned alot about LOPA, we did a great job with CPR, but what I was most impressed was your matureity in front of our guest and the approach you took with the CPR infomation. This week will also be special. We will continue with CPR, Heimlich manuvere, and start chapter 12 (Obtaining a Medical History and Vital Signs). Many grades have gone up and we should not get satisified yet. We will also start one of my favorite chapters "Caring for Commom Medical Emergencies. We are half way into the semester, many are doing great and we have a few that better up your game, or you will be with this years 8th graders while you friends go to the high school.
Oct. 21st-25th...This week we will jump all over Chapter 16 and learn from Paramedics. Accompanying her is one of my former students to tell you about the great Explorer Program Acadian Ambulance provides. Also this week 3rd block students will learn who earned the Lady of the Lake Trauma field trip. Some grades are creeping up, keep up the great work.
Oct. 28th-Nov. 1st...New chapter, 17 is about Environmental Issues. Mother Nature can be tough with the cold and the heat. Those 2 elements can lead to heat stroke, heat exhaustion, frost bite, hypothermia, etc. so we must be ready to deal with these issues. So to add to the excitment, we will have a Louisiana Wildlife Agent speak to us about the dangers out there. Friday, 3rd block goes on their field trip.
Nov. 4th-8th...Boy time is flying, lets keep working hard. This week the 4th block class will take their field trip to OLOL trauma dept. Yes there will be a sub and also one on Thursday. Jan. 28th-Feb. 1st...This week we will start a long but interesting chapter, Chapter 4 is the Introduction to Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy, and Lifespan Development. It's kinda hard and next to impossible to assist a patient if you cannot find whats causing the pain. Do you know where the humerous is? Do you know what lateral is? Do you know what palpate means? Well, at your age, you shouldn't but you will this week. Also this week we will have 2 guest speakers. On Tuesday we will meet and learn about 911 calls from the Director of the Livinston Parish 911 system. Friday we will learn alot about organ donations from several individuals from LOPA (Louisiana Organ Procurment Agency). So its gonna be another great week in room 501. SO BE HERE!
Feb. 4th-8th...Last week was awesome, maybe the best. Chapter 4 is interesting, 2 dynatic speakers with a ton of information. This week we will continue Chapter 4 and don't forget, Thursday evening is where great teachers meet great parents/grandparents. Remind your loved ones. Mar. 11th-15th. So proud of all my students for doing real well with the CPR/AED techniques. This week we will start Chapter 12 (Obtaining a Medical History and Vital Signs). A very important chapter leading up to the physial care of the patient. They say good patient assessment normally leads to good patient care.
Mar. 18th-22nd...Last week was awesome. Not only did we learn how to get information about a patient (whether concious or unconcious) but we also visited a rescue unit. This week we will continue Chapter 12. ALSO THIS THURSDAY IS A HALF DAY.
Mar. 25th-29th...This week we will jump to Chapter 16 (Caring for Common Medical Emergencies0. We will learn about behavioral emergency, stroke, convulsions, and many other everyday things that can pop up. Also this week we will have the State Trooper in. We will talk on things ranging from seat belts to your responsibilities of your passengers.
Apr. 1st-5th..This is going to be a super week. First of all we will continue on common medical emergencies, but we also be visited by District 4 Fire Crew and Louisiana Wildlife Agent (Tue and Wed). We have had a great semester so lets not slow down now, we have alot of cool things to learn.
Apr. 8th-12th...Wow, last week was awesome with chapter 16 and our guest speakers (fireman and la wildlife agent). This week we will start chapter 17 (Caring for environmental Emergencies) which has alot of information already covered in previous chapters. What the heck, its important and it will be a great reminder of what we already have learned. So lets keep working hard a little longer as we close out this semester.
Apr. 15th-18th...Alright, a 4 day week. Hope everybody had a great Spring Fling. Looks like our school acting maturely enough to earn a free Jean Day on Thursday, so good really does pay off. This week we will start Chapter 18 (soft tissue injuries and bleeding). Also, this Thursday we will turn in our First Aid kits (100pts).
Apr. 29th-May 3rd...Welcome back. Hope you had a great holiday and got alot of rest. Well its BACK TO SCHOOL and we only have 3 and a half weeks. We lost a day due to the bad weather so we will have to make that information up. This week we will continue Chapte 18, test on Tuesday and take 2nd half test on Friday. Next week we will have a Dental Hygentist come to our clas on mouth issues (care of and injuries). We may also start talking about insurance issues. So welcome back and lets sprint to the finish line.
May 6th-10th...Monday we will listen to a Dental Hygentist on mouth issues and their occupation. This week we will also be starting a new chapter, Care of the Elderly/Geriatrics.
A very important chapter because we all are getting older, and we need to learn/understand the issues that our older generations will go through. Knowing this will help undestand issues and be ready to assit those in need.
May 13th-17th...Here we go. Last full week of the spring semester. Told you it would go fast and I am telling you we will not stop till its over. This week we will start reviewing for the final exam.
Also on Thursday, we will listen and learn from an Acadian Ambulance EMT and Paramedic. We will learn their differences in education, salary, and protocals they allowed or not allowed to do.
So Room 501 will still be listening, learning, and having fun.

This week we will start Chapter 11, Bones and Muscle Injuries, my favorite. Also this week, we will make up the day we didn't get to hear from the Acadian Ambulance Paramedic and the Supervisor. Also, lets all be on good behavior because our Spring Fling is Friday.
(16th Week (May 2nd-6th)
What a great week last week. This week we will continue Chapter 11, test and jump into Chapter 13. Remember to start working on your first aid kit, at least find a shoe box and go ahead and label it. We have less then 4 weeks, don't stop know. Remember, this grading scale really doesn't raise up grades by doing good on finals, but doing poorly on it could lower it. Lets do the very best we can on every quiz, exam, and project in every class.
(17th Week (May 9th-13th)
Here we go, our last week before its final time. This week, we will get it started with a visit from our sheriff. Many of you will be taking EOC exams, so get after it.
(1st Week (Aug. 10th-14th)
WOW....Welcome back. Our first day together (this past Friday), we got alot accomplished. Last year I had 3 great classes and I expect the same this spring. I am positive that my 3 new classes can achieve the same success and give the same amount of effort each day that the fall classes did. In class, we will start with the history of first aid and the various levels of health care from the EMR to the Paradmedic. We will also take the pre-test.....relax. This test is show US what you don't know right now and what this class is all about. But I willing to bet, you will do real well on the post test. I can say that because we WILL do what it takes to improve. It's my desire and effort to make this class the best you have ever taken. Also, hopefully I can become one of your favorite teachers. So I want you to try to be one of my favorite students. Don't forget your student fee and all those papers which needs to be signed by paretns/guardians. This week we will start Chapter 1 which speaks about the history of Emergency Services. Again, welcome back to school.

SUPER FIRST WEEK....
WFHS has some super students. In IHO, we covered and learned a ton from Chapter 1. This week we will dive into the Ethics and Legal Issues (Chap. 2) surrounding the med-world. Many started off well with doing a good job on the Alma-Mata quiz, having their notebook up to date, and passing the Chapter 1 test. A few did not, those really need to get back on track quick or its going to be a rough year in this class. Besure to ask for assistance from me before we get too far in the book. A secret to this class and ALL classes is to read your notes nightly.
(3rd Week ( Aug. 24th-28th)
This week we will start Chapter 3. This chapter will be about the well being of the Medical Responder. This includes the mental and physical aspects of this occupation. I am busy lining up my Special Speakers, so do keep up with the notes taken so we can carry a very professional conversation with these hereos.
For those who have not turned in all their paperwork or fees, please take care of this.

Make plans to be here Thursday in the best class around. This week you will get your first interim, this is your scorecard of your success and failures to date. No matter what you receive, lets work hard, harder, and hardest for the next one.
