Dear Parents / Guardians:

Welcome to second grade! Our class is room number 302. My name is Mrs. Scarlett Smith and I am so excited about being your child’s teacher this year.

The following is a list of important items that may be helpful to you throughout the year. If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

1. Notes- All notes will be sent back and forth in the Communicator Folders or better known in the classroom as Take Home Folder. I ask the children to check their folders each morning for notes, lunch money etc.. Please check the folder daily for any notes or additional homework that may be sent home daily.

2. Test Papers- Graded papers are sent home on Tuesday in the Communication Folder. Please sign the sheet stapled to the back of the folder and return all papers the next day if possible. There is also a spot for you to write comments or concerns or you may place a separate note in your child’s folder.

3. Conferences- If you need to schedule a conference, please send a note along with the day and time you prefer and I’ll send a note to confirm the day and time. I would be glad to meet with you any morning or afternoon with the exception of days I am on duty.

4. Birthdays- Please feel free to send cupcakes and punch for birthdays. These can be dropped off at the office. I ask that you please send a note ahead of time so I can make arrangements in our schedule.

5. Parties- We usually have class parties for Halloween (This is a Fall or Harvest Party- I don’t do much with Halloween.) , Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Parents are invited to all our parties. Please remember that younger siblings may come, but the parents only send treats for the number of children in the class. However, there is always plenty of food for everyone.

6. Book Orders- I send home book orders once a month. The children are encouraged to read as much as possible and there are some wonderful books available. You may write one check for the total amount if you order from more than one club. Please make checks payable to Albany Lower Elementary. I’ll place the order and the office will make one check to the company. Please do not feel obligated to order, the students have the opportunity to check out accelerated reader books weekly.

7. Homework- I usually do not send a lot of homework other than weekly spelling words, the reading story, and tests. If we have a phonics or English test, I may send a review sheet the night before so again, please check the folder daily. There is always a study guide for science and social living tests. I try to send these a week or more before the test.

9. Bathroom- I take time out of our schedule to visit the bathroom in the morning, after lunch and at the end of the day. The students also have the opportunity to go at both recesses. Usually this provides plenty of opportunity to take care of all our needs. However, if your child has an emergency or has specific needs, I’ll gladly let them go if they privately explain their situation. (If they ask to go 5 minutes after we return to class and they did not go when everyone else went, then we may have a problem.) I ask that you please send me a note about occasional concerns such as a virus or upset tummy. If extensive bathroom privileges are needed, the office may request a note from the doctor.

10. Classroom Rules- The students have a tremendous amount of learning to do this year and I expect them to follow our classroom rules and procedures to the best of their ability. I will send a weekly behavior rating along with comments on the parent signature sheet in the test folder each week. Additional notes may be sent home daily if needed.

11. Supplies- Please send all supplies to school with your child’s name on each item. I collect all the extra supplies and store them for later in the year. At the end of the year, I will return any extra supplies to you. It is so much easier to pass them out as needed rather than send a note when we run out.

I hope this information is helpful and I look forward to working with all of you. Please feel free to send notes or schedule conferences as often as needed.

Thanks,
Mrs. Scarlett Smith
